  • "King: In the Wilderness" documentary (2018, TV-14, 1h 51m) Friday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. at the Carlsbad Dove Library In honor of Black History Month this February, we are proud to present a documentary that explores the final months of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life. Dr. King's legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of American history over the past 70 years. This film provides an intimate look at his last months, marked by personal struggle and doubt, as he and his closest advisors wrestled with the belief that his role as a leading advocate for change had come to an end.

  • This class will explore the range of techniques possible when using acrylics, with emphasis on saturated color and creativity. Students will be encouraged to paint freely and spontaneously. Materials: Paint: Fast-drying acrylics are recommended, although students may opt for the “open” (slow-drying) type if they prefer. Brand names include Liquitex, Golden, Utrecht, and Winsor & Newton. Colors: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Naphthol Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. Other useful colors: Brilliant Purple, Dioxazine Purple, Hookers Green Deep Hue Permanent. The first six colors and Titanium White are a must-have. Any other colors the student may have are encouraged. Brushes: Brights, #2, #4, #6. (Winsor & Newton University brand is good.); any bristle brush students may have. Supports: Small canvas panels, 5” x 7”, 6” x 8”, 8” x 8”, 8” x 10.” These can be purchased at Michaels (quite inexpensive and good quality).   • Scientists are far from knowing all of the complexities of Earth's ocean. With this comic, we explore some of what scientists do know, like its role as one of the world's largest carbon sinks and how life changes as the waters get deeper.
  • Make a Turkey Wing Hand Broom! March 9, from 1-4 p.m. A Turkey Wing hand broom is an epic example of Appalachian folk art. It could be considered a functional tool or a decorated art piece. These brooms are made with natural broomcorn. Instructor AB will teach you the traditional techniques for binding and shaping the broomcorn, which is made from sorghum, to create a fun and unique experience…others call it a spiritual occurrence. Let’s sweep it up. Ages 13+ years and up is recommended.   • “Fauvism is not everything, but it is the foundation of everything.”—Henri Matisse Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, and Maurice Vlaminck were the creators of this powerful era in art of the early 1900s. The act of painting itself was at the heart of Fauvism. It was the first movement to insist in explicit terms that a painting is the canvas and the pigments—not the subject. This class will explore the Postimpressionist movement that led to the Fauve movement strongly influencing the art of the 20th century. Leaving behind classic color, perspective, and subject matter and moving into exciting, bold, vibrant colors, spontaneous compositions, and highly gestural application of paint techniques is what we will explore while painting in session. A pink sky? Why not! Come join the fun, freedom, and excitement of expressive Fauve painting. This class is for all levels of painters, both beginning and experienced. You are also welcome to do your own work. This is a good place to be with other talented painters and enjoy the creative atmosphere here at the Athenaeum.   • Still-life painting is the study of everyday objects that take on a new life, tell a story and can act as a portal to another place or time. Emphasis in this class will be on an impressionist technique of painting using an alla prima (wet into wet) style of painting, keeping loose brushwork, thick paint, and eliminating detail. We will cover composition, color, form, and lighting. There will be a setup for each class along with photo images to create from. I do a painting demonstration in each class. One of our exercises will be a personal still life using objects that have meaning for us. The best part is that we will have fun as we share our discoveries together. Come join us!
