Simultaneously, a break from monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions allowed for the decline of interest in religious paintings. Furthermore, a burgeoning middle class sought out new genres of painting that helped enhance their homes and reflect their tastes and interests. Landscapes, cityscapes, portraiture, and still life grew ever more popular in this era. Many of the most beloved artists of the 1600s also came from this region. This docent-led talk on the Dutch Baroque will highlight artists such as Pieter Claesz, Frans Hals, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Johannes Vermeer.
