In this class, children will explore their favorite superhero themes while engaging in fun activities, like drawing, painting, and crafting their very own superhero costumes. By learning dance routines inspired by superhero powers, they will build coordination, strength, and confidence along the way. With a focus on creativity, self-expression, and teamwork, Superheroes: Art & Dance is a fantastic way for young kids to exercise their imagination and dance skills in the Athenaeum’s La Jolla Studio. Create beautiful handmade jewelry! Choose from two upcoming dates: March 30, 2-4:30 p.m. -or- May 25, 2-4:30 p.m. Join Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up. Celebrate Valentine's Day weekend by making art with or for someone you love! In this workshop led by artist Natalie M. Godinez, participants will learn the basics of stamp carving, how to create a DIY pattern, and how to use found materials to create your own stamps. You will leave with a hand-carved stamp, a recycled stamp, and a hand-printed bandana. We hope you join us at ArtReach for this artist-led workshop! About the Artist: Natalie M Godinez (she/her/ella) is a Los Angeles-based artist, educator, and community advocate raised in Tijuana, México. Godinez explores memories, identity, and relationships to places and language through textiles, printmaking, and collaboration. "Save the Ocean 5" art and poetry exhibition from March 26 to May 28 celebrates the richness of the ocean environment by displaying a variety of mediums from a diverse range of artists, whose work is about the ocean world. Front Porch Gallery in collaboration with Surfing Madonna Oceans Project endeavors to promote a love and understanding of the fragile coastal environment by encouraging people to be stewards of the ocean, to appreciate what we have and preserve it for future generations. Artists will have the opportunity to share their experience at Docent Tours, and poets will be invited to read at the reception. Throughout the exhibition we’ll host opportunities for the community to view the work and experience creative engagements at the gallery through making, discussing, and viewing programs. Create a professional arm-rod-and-mouth puppet of your very own from Rene Rubalcava, owner and puppeteer of LV Puppet Studio of Las Vegas who learned the art of puppet making from a Jim Henson Muppeteer. There’s no better time to create your own one-of-a-kind fuzzy monster! In this workshop, we guide you from start to finish as you select, cut, hot glue and assemble the pieces and personality of your own customized puppet. No sewing is required in this workshop. Students bring their puppets to life with their own unique interests and imaginations, and by choice and placement of different face details. Each one is unique!
