  • April 24, 2023 SHelter to Soldier and Zero8 Hundred to Host Inaugural “SISTERHOOD OF SERVICE” Event will honor more than 100 women who have served this great nation through military service San Diego, CA -- Shelter to Soldier, a San Diego non-profit committed to supporting veterans on their mental health journey with trained psychiatric service dogs, along with Zero8hundred, whose mission is to support transitioning military members throughout their post service lifecycle through impact, engagement, and community connection, will host the inaugural “Sisterhood of Service” event on Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Mission Beach Women’s Club. Sponsored by The Boeing Company, the free event will honor more than 100 women who have served this great nation through military service. Shelter to Soldier and Zero8Hundred will honor their service, assist them with resources that can help them thrive following military service, and inspire them to continue to be a voice for women who serve and are transitioning to civilian life. The luncheon will begin at 11 a.m. emceed by Kristi Hanson of Jagger & Kristi on Magic 92.5. Guests will be treated to lunch provided by Toast Catering, with inspirational messages from the region’s women in military and veteran communities. Guest registration will open at 9:30 a.m. and includes an event swag bag with self-care gifts as well as complimentary opportunity drawing tickets for giveaways. Optionally, guests can enjoy a guided bay front yoga flow for all levels at 10 a.m. by Veterans Yoga Project, as well as paddle boarding or kayaking provided by Mission Bay Sport Center at 2:30 p.m. For more information and to register, please visit here. About: Shelter to Soldier is a nonprofit organization that adopts dogs from local shelters and trains them to become service dogs for post 9/11 combat veterans suffering from PTSD, TBI, Military Sexual Trauma, and or other injuries associated with traumatic service experiences. The program also places emotional support animals (ESAs) with active-duty military and veterans, as well as deploys the Shelter to Soldier Canine Ambassadors, a team of therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers, to provide visits of love and comfort to local military, veterans and their families. Zero8Hundred’s Mission is to support transitioning military members throughout their post service lifecycle through impact, engagement, and social / community connection! Zero8Hundred provides a peer navigation, social work, platform that is collaborative in nature and is responsive to the needs of our service members transitioning back to our San Diego community. Services offered assist with Employment, Education, Health & Wellness, Social / Community Connections / Networking, and Basic / Urgent Needs such as Housing, Food, Mental health, and Childcare.

In this rigid heddle loom workshop, students will learn to weave their own unique handwoven fabric in both plain weave (a classic, simple pattern) and clasped weft (where two wefts interconnect, creating unique patterns). Each student will learn the basics of how the loom works, a variety of simple weaving techniques, plain weave, clasped weft weaving, and finally, hemstitching for a finished piece. Students will weave a length of handwoven fabric of their choosing using the techniques in-class. Looms will be pre-warped in this class and students will weave together on Ashford Looms with 100% cotton fiber for a fiber-friendly afternoon. Want to know how to thread your machine and wind a bobbin? This class is for you! We’ll show you how to use your machine, simple troubleshooting tips, and the sewing basics.   • No experience necessary. Ages 16+ welcome! This 2-part workshop is designed to teach students the basics of woodworking with hand tools. Students will construct a wooden plant stand using half-lap, dowels, and notched joinery. Students learn how to safely use chisels and a mallet, along with other hand tools such as a hand saw, card scraper, block planes, and spokeshaves. We will show sharpening techniques for chisels and how to apply finish to the plant stand. Materials will be provided.   • This class is taught by women to empower women & non-gender conforming individuals in the woodshop. We cover the properties of wood, machine safety, and techniques on the chop saw, including miters, angled cuts, and how to properly cut joinery for them. Other machines will be introduced as well such as the router, biscuit jointer, and drill press. We’ll show you how to properly sand, and finish your piece with an easy, non-toxic, traditional finish.   • Saturday, May 6 from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Join instructor Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. Mother’s Day is coming up! This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to kiln-formed or fused glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have roughly 8” x 8” of space in the kiln – plenty of space for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. Supply Fee $10 (cash only) is due to instructor at the workshop. It includes pre-fused adornments plus jewelry findings for up to 3 items (excluding leather for bracelets/belts). Additional findings, chains, cording, and leather for bracelets and belts will also be available for cash purchase. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up.
