Lecture title: Regenerative medicine for the treatment of MS: Enhancing repair to prevent progression Front Row lecture with Luke Lairson, PhD Description: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating autoimmune disease that disrupts the central nervous system, causing symptoms like muscle weakness, cognitive challenges and a gradual loss of function that current treatments cannot fully repair. MS arises when the immune system attacks the myelin sheath, the protective layer insulating neurons. Scripps Research chemistry professor Luke Lairson will discuss his research on the body’s natural repair pathways—specifically those that activate endogenous stem cells to restore myelin. His work aims to develop therapies that complement existing therapeutic approaches and halt MS progression. Ahead of its official opening at Del Mar Plaza on April 1, Camino Books: For the Road Ahead will host a special preview event featuring a book reading and signing with author DK Ryland. The Thanksgiving season is upon us. Lots of cooking and cleaning. Relatives and friends gathering together. It's a busy time of year for all of us. Would you like to take a 3-hour break doing something fun and creative? Something peaceful? In this workshop, we will do large drawings using salt on black poster board, and coffee on white butcher paper. Working from black and white reference photos provided by the instructor, you will learn some fundamental drawing techniques. These are temporary - you won't take anything home except some knowledge, and photos of your drawings. This is a meditative process that is an interesting antidote to the chaos of the holiday season. Materials: All supplies are provided—just bring your phone to take photos. Join us for our Modern Calligraphy workshop for beginners, where you will learn the art of hand lettering using a traditional pointed dip pen and ink with a contemporary approach. Many people find Modern Calligraphy attractive to learn because it allows them to create beautiful, fun, and hand-crafted letters that are unique and personal. Modern Calligraphy is often characterized by its use of thick and thin lines, giving the letters a dynamic and expressive quality. Enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages. Learn to needle felt! October 19, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Learn to create simple sea pebbles from humble wool! Using wool, you will learn and practice needle felting techniques, feeling the cloud of fibers taking body and turning into a beautiful object. Each student will make an assortment of sea pebbles, in different tones, shapes and sizes. They make a lovely decoration, lucky stones, or tokens of friendship! In this class you will learn about wool, how to use different size needles, and felting safety (guards will be supplied for use), as we embark in the meditative process of felting, rounding edges, smoothing angles, and adding delicate veins to make your own personal trompe-l’oeil stones. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome.
