The Borrego Art Institute kicks off its 2024-2025 season Oct. 5 with “The Art of Flora and Fauna” showcasing our world’s astonishing plants, animals and elements. New and returning regional artists will present their work in a variety of mediums in the McQuown-Wermers Main Gallery. The North Gallery will feature “Starry Nights: Wildlife with a Twist,” paintings by Sarah Soward that merge the astronomy and mythology of the cosmos into wildlife paintings. Soward’s symbolic and surreal art centered on animals is an effort to elicit love and genuine concern for them. Artist Rinse de Konig’s show “Natural Impressions” will be spotlighted in the Alcove Gallery. His paintings of impressionistic scenes are “a world of color and peace,” featuring a composition that is uncomplicated but forceful through the choice of color and shape, where they become a story of their own.    The opening reception is Oct. 5 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. The shows run through November 3. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium. You may leave your work at your station for the entire workshop. Materials: The material fee includes three small wood-panel supports, 8” x 8”; R & F encaustic medium; some R & F wax colors; R & F wax colors sticks; heated palette; some brushes; heat guns; some collage materials; some paints; images; things to embed; mark-making tools; oil pastels; collage materials; transfer materials; paints; gloves; scissors. Friday, September 27, 2024 from 4–6 p.m. Jean Krumbein (life drawing) PEEC for TEENS (13–18 years old) PEEC is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. The program is free and teens can register.
