  • St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center will host its 46th Annual Haute with Heart Fashion Show, with the theme “Couture,” paying homage to one of the fashion capitals of the world, Paris. Inspired by a piece from artist and SMSC student Mark Rimland, guests will be taking a day trip to the City of Love. Attendees will be greeted by live Parisian inspired music, fabulous boutique shopping, a silent auction, and free flowing champagne. Once the ballroom doors open, all messieurs and madames will enjoy a delicious Parisian inspired luncheon, special up-lifting performances by SMSC students, live auction, and a one-of-a-kind fashion show produced by the talented Kristi Brooks, who has worked with top designers and styled celebrities around the globe. SMSC is a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. All funds raised will benefit the organization's nationally recognized innovative programs, where they combine the culture of care and creativity within quality programs to provide liberal arts education, practical skills development, employment, and dignity for a lifetime. SMSC allows students to develop creative outlets, learn marketable skills, and gain a sense of independence and self-esteem. Over 400 students attend SMSC, ranging from recent high school graduates to seniors in their eighties.   • Learn the latest advances in caring for patients with orthopedic and sports medicine injuries at a daylong symposium, featuring expert presentations and discussions. The event will bring together sports medicine physicians; former professional athletes and coaches from Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association; local team general managers; athletic trainers; physical therapists; and others on the front lines of sports and athletic care. Topics will include a thorough analysis of overhead throwing athletes, such as baseball pitchers; considerations for contact sports such as football, rugby and hockey; tracking and managing mental stress in athletes; overall athletic development, performance training and injury risk reduction; and health preservation after an athletic career. Breakfast and lunch will be included. Presented by the San Diego Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Fellowship. The symposium will be held Friday, July 26 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Alexandira at Torrey Pines, 10996 Torreyana Rd., San Diego 92121.   • Learn to Warp & Weave! July 21 or September 28, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (w/1 hr lunch break) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a sustainably harvested wooden Rigid Heddle Loom and soft natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, instructor Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn: * How a Rigid Heddle Loom works; * How to Plan a Textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.) * How to Warp a Rigid Heddle; * How to Weave; * How to Remove your Woven; * And, How to Finish a freshly Handwoven Textile. All materials to warp & weave a sample included for use. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! OPTION: Students will weave on Ashford looms. Instructor will have a variety of Ashford looms (Sample It and Knitters Looms) present for purchase in class.
