For days, police say, Samuel Patrick Groft cruised through the streets of Los Angeles on his bicycle, single-handedly chopping down about a dozen city trees with an electric chainsaw in three different neighborhoods.

A trio of exciting abstract artists will show at the popular “Expressions in the Abstract” exhibit at the Borrego Art Institute starting Nov. 9 in the McQuown-Wermers Gallery. The colorful abstract paintings and mixed media of Antonio Escalante are personal representations of the landscape in which his work is made, be it the sea, desert, mountains, or built environment. Through intimacy and abstraction, he creates a compelling visual narrative. Painter Jennifer McHugh’s loose, free-flowing work features emotional pieces influenced by the everyday and her response to it. “My work serves as a visual journal, and my hope is that each viewer interprets a story, an inspiration, as unique and spontaneous as what moved me to paint it,” she said. Mixed media artist Robert Wright will present assemblages made from detritus of the Southwest that invite inquiry and contemplation. “Happenstance and serendipity are integral in the revival of these objects,” Wright said. “Giving them a new purpose and a second chance is the pleasure of presenting this body of work.” The opening reception is Nov. 9 from 5-7 p.m. The shows run through Dec. 8. "Their Wall, Our Canvas" exhibits nearly fifty multimedia pieces by San Diego artists-activists Antonia Davis (b.1955), Bob Davis (b.1952), and Natalia Ventura (b.1998). Antonia is a founding member of the San Diego Puppet Insurgency, and has led art builds with dozens of local social and environmental justice groups over the last twenty years. Bob has been a lifelong supporter and photo documentarian of local struggles. Natalia, an emerging artist-activist from Chula Vista, met the couple in 2023 while leading art intervention projects to save Friendship Park. Since then the three have formed a bond rooted in their shared passions for art and activism. Several of the works on view are products of their collaboration. Spanning across textile, installation, photography, performance, painting, and video, the works in this exhibition aim to deconstruct harmful narratives and replace them with stories and images that heal. These artists contribute to the Collective by helping us imagine a different reality, painting the picture of what liberation looks like, and making the revolution irresistible. The San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival is a vibrant 5-day community event dedicated to celebrating and preserving American Vernacular Dance and its African roots. Organized by Claudia Gomez, owner of Tap Into Yoga & Reiki and Summer Briggs, owner of Rap A Tap Center for the Arts, the festival will be held from Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, to Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at Keiller Leadership Academy. This festival will feature a diverse range of activities, including tap dance, swing dance, jazz dance, African dance, and breaking classes, along with a music theory class, historical panel discussions, a faculty concert, a student showcase, social dances, and jam sessions. Daily classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special events scheduled for the evenings. Renowned dance educators and musicians from San Diego and beyond will participate as faculty members and performers. The opening faculty concert, featuring a special African Drum and Dance company from San Diego, and a live jazz band, will kick off the festival on Saturday, November 23, at 7 p.m. Additional highlights include an open jam session at Panama 66 in Balboa Park on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, and the student showcase on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024.
