  • Drop-Off Camp Friday, November 25 from 9 a.m.-Noon Ages 3-6 Welcome! Taught by instructor Hayley Haspel-Winick, children will go on explorations observing and learning about various things in nature. They will explore through sensory activities, songs, and stories while developing coordination skills. Some of our songs will be in Spanish. Campers will make themed crafts in various mediums (clay wood, and textiles). Littles learn best by doing and playing. We practice handwork and workplay. We “play” with natural objects and materials such as wood, stones, clay, felt, paper + more! Each project is planned so that children build skills while satisfying their need to explore. Projects are safe, non-toxic, earth friendly, and full of creativity. Socials: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter
  • The Danny Green Trio, featuring pianist/composer Danny Green, bassist Justin Grinnell, and drummer Julien Cantelm, join Seattle based group Meridian Odyssey for a double bill jazz performance at Dizzy’s on Sunday, October 9 at 7 p.m. Dizzy’s is located at 1717 Morena Blvd. San Diego, CA 92122, and tickets are $20 cash at the door.
Over the past decade, jazz pianist and Origin Records recording artist Danny Green has earned recognition as a bandleader and as a composer with a gift for spinning lyrical, absorbing narratives. Green’s growing portfolio of vibrant sounds – an enchanting mix of jazz, classical, and Brazilian rhythms – has captured the attention of critics around the world, including DownBeat Magazine, Jazziz, the San Diego Union Tribune, the Boston Globe, and Public Radio International. It’s no small wonder that Green has earned two San Diego Music awards for Best Jazz Album and an additional award for Best Jazz Artist. His long-time trio includes bassist Justin Grinnell and drummer Julien Cantelm, noteworthy musicians in their own right, and together they have developed a nearly psychic connection as they perform Green’s original compositions and jazz standards. Green takes listeners on a journey that is equal parts introspective and exuberant, and always compelling.
Meridian Odyssey features saxophonist Santosh Sharma, pianist Dylan Haye, guitarist Martin Budde, bassist Ben Feldman, and drummer Xavier Lecouturier. This concert is part of their thirteen-stop "West Coast" Tour. Their recent Origin Records release, Second Wave, contains mostly original songs by the band members and sounds like 21st-century hard bop, influenced by modern pop and classic jazz fusion. KNKX radio host and jazz critic said of the group, “Each of these players is incredibly talented; their youthful exhuberance shines through on urgent and passionate uptempo flights and intense, moody ballads alike. There are hooks to be found throughout Second Wave, but the band's interplay - the musical conversation in each performance - is most striking to my ear.” Concert goers can expect two sets packed with top-notch musicianship, beautiful song-writing, high energy and all around fun! • The rates of sexually transmitted diseases are trending upward, following a national trend more than two years into the pandemic. Experts are calling for more funding for STD prevention. Meanwhile, SANDAG lost nearly $2 million dollars in toll money last year. Plus, are there enough electric vehicles in California to meet growing demand as gas prices spike?
  • Adults and Ages 10+ (with parent) Welcome! Instructor Hayley Haspel-Winick will lead this exploration of bundle dyeing — using flowers and plant-based food scraps to infuse natural pigment into fiber. Create a one-of-a kind silk scarf with nature’s gift of color. While our bundles steam, we will paint with the flowers and plant-based food scraps and observe how natural modifiers can create a rainbow of colors on paper. If you like, gather a handful of your favorite flowers to bring and use in your bundle. This is an excellent workshop to do with a child, although anyone is welcome! If you’d like to work on one single project with your child, just purchase one ticket. Socials: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter

  • On Wednesday, September 28, San Diego Mesa College will hold a reception for "In Lak’ech: Tu eres mi otro yo," featuring artworks by Maria de Los Angeles and Ryan Bonilla. The Reception will be held from 4-7 p.m., in the Mesa College Art Gallery (FA-103). "In Lak’ech: Tu eres me otro yo" (You are my other me) invokes a Mayan concept popularized by Chicano playwright Luis Valdez. This affirmation reflects a philosophy of caring and connecting with the human spirit of one another. This idea sets the tone for this two-person exhibit at the San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month. Through evocative paintings, wearable dress sculptures and drawings, artist Maria de Los Angeles – a former Dreamer and community college student, who is now a Professor at Yale University - connects with America’s multiple selves: those of the immigrant, the refugee, the undocumented, the indigenous. She questions and breaks down racist stereotypes and tackles otherness and the concept of belonging. Sharing the space, Ryan Bonilla’s monotype prints and Polaroid installation titled “We are Misfits” are a celebration of alternative culture. Exhibition runs through October 13.
