  • The 2nd San Diego Hong Kong Film Festival features 4 movies from different eras. Boat People (1982) tells the story of life in Vietnam after the communist takeover which eventually led to numerous civilians fleeing the country by boat. Once Upon a Time in China (1991) is a classic action movie that explores how China responds towards the introduction of western civilization and values through the story of a kung fu master. Movies like All Shall Be Well and Once Upon a Time in HKDSE (both released in 2024) are examples of recent production aiming for the Hong Kong market (without access to mainland Chinese market) which greatly limits their budget. They tend to delve into local and non-mainstream topics like LGBT. Discussion sessions following Boat People and All Shall Be Well will be held at the venue.   • This course is designed for students who wish to improve their conversational skills. Each session will focus on dialogues and discussions in Yiddish, to help students improve their fluency. Students will expand their vocabulary with new phrases and expressions, fine-tune their pronunciation, and gain confidence using Yiddish in diverse situations. Topics will include interests and hobbies, everyday situations, culture and current events. We will use interactive activities like role-playing and debates. Additionally, students will learn Yiddish songs that will deepen their understanding of Ashkenazi culture. When: Sundays 12:30 -1:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. ET / 9:30 -10:30 pm in Central Europe: Jan 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb 2 Cost: 5 classes for $180 (early bird, if paid before December 22), $200 (regular price, if paid after December 22) Teacher: Julia Koifman Julia Koifman studied Slavic and German Studies in Berlin and Moscow, as well as Yiddish and Jewish Studies in Potsdam, Haifa, and New York. She worked at the Institute for Slavic Studies at Humboldt University and served as a tutor for Yiddish language and literature at the University of Potsdam. Her MA thesis is a comparative analysis of short stories by the Yiddish authors Rokhl Brokhes and Roze Palatnik. Julia also translates Yiddish literature into German and English.   • For newly diagnosed patients, as well as those going through or having completed breast cancer treatment, Scripps Cancer Center offers this free support group, facilitated in Spanish. The group is a safe space to find emotional support, understanding, new coping skills and encouragement.
