On 7 September 2024, we will host a commemorative screening of a 30-minute film created by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, featuring first-person accounts of the unity, resilience, and hope that defined September 11 and the days and weeks that followed. As we approach the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, we believe that remembering those killed and honoring the first responders and all who raced toward danger to save others is critical to helping a new generation better understand the world in which they live and can inspire them to meet today’s challenges with compassion and unity. Following the screening we will also welcome program participants for a discussion moderated by a Visionary Network Member, alongside our panelists. The 47th annual Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands, one of Southern California’s largest and oldest high school marching band competitions, is set for Saturday, Oct. 26 at Mt. Carmel High School in Rancho Penasquitos. The tournament will showcase the music and artistic pageantry of 30 high school marching bands from across Southern California and will feature both parade and field show competitions. Field show performances by small bands will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mt. Carmel’s Sundevil Stadium, followed by a free parade band review from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the school’s parking lot. Field shows with large bands are planned from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Sundevil Stadium. Food, drink and merchandise concessions will be available throughout the day and evening. Tickets for the field shows can be purchased the day of the tournament at the stadium ticket window. General admission prices are $15 for adults; $12 for students, seniors and military; and free for children 5 and under. Tickets include admission to both the morning and afternoon/evening field shows, as well as for all award presentations. Mt. Carmel High School is located at 9550 Carmel Mountain Rd, San Diego 92129. The school’s parking lot will not be available for public parking the day of the event, so spectators should park in the neighborhoods surrounding the school. The tournament is the single-largest fundraiser for the school’s music program. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Mt. Exploring Mexico's Contemporary Classical Flute & Piano Music Flutist, Julia Barnett, & Pianist, Kathryn Lieppman present a recital of Music of the 20th/21st centuries written by Mexican Composers on Saturday, Sept. 28th, 4pm, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church 700 D Ave, Coronado, CA 92118 This program will feature Bichito by Diana Syrse for Piccolo and Piano, Leonardo Coral's "Sonata No Tan Breve," Samuel Zyman's Concerto No. 1, and Eduardo Angulo's "Sonata for Flute and Piano." Admission to the concert is free. However, a free will offering will be taken to support the artists. Ms. Lieppman and Dr. Barnett met while studying music at the esteemed Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and have continued their collaborations throughout the years. The program was inspired by Dr. Barnett's research for her Dissertation, "Performing Practice for Roberto Peña’s Concierto Para Flauta y Orquesta," as well as her collaborations with composer Samuel Zyman. This concert showcases the rich and vibrant flute music of Mexico, and will be the first of many performances focusing on Mexican and Latin American music, culminating in a professional CD showcasing the many gems from south of the border. From the KPBS weekend arts preview: The Old Globe collaborated with SoulKiss Theater to bring two one-act plays to the stage, written by local hip-hop artists and playwrights Miki Vale and Queen Kandi Cole. Vale's play "And We Danced" is the story of 1940s LGBTQ+ activist Ruth Ellis. Cole's "Game Night" is a story of friendship and differences during a board game night. Get ready for a theatrical takeover as two hip hop artists, Miki Vale and Queen Kandi Cole, bring their respective stage plays, “And We Danced” and “Game Night,” to the Chrysalis: Monarch Center for the Arts this fall. The production titled “2 RAPPERS 2 PLAYS,” features two one-act plays back to back as part of The Old Globe’s Arts Engagement CoLAB program, in collaboration with SoulKiss Theater. Queen Kandi Cole’s "GAME NIGHT," directed by Kimberly King, follows a group of friends who gather for a night of games but wind up digging into the complexities of their diverse backgrounds and belief structures post-pandemic during a chaotic and hilarious evening of libations and truth-telling. It features a dynamic cast, including Eboni Harvey, Kendrick Dial, Julia Giolzetti, Geoffrey Geissinger, Maria Boncza and Winnie Beasley. Miki Vale’s "AND WE DANCED," also directed by Kimberly King, is an exploration of the life and impact of Ruth Ellis, a Black, openly queer woman and LGBTQIA activist from the 1940s who created a safe haven and sustained advocacy for the Queer Black community of Detroit.
