In an effort to reach across political divides, a group of veterans has been holding regular gatherings to talk about it — all over a beer. They call the events "Pints and Patriotism."

A festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring live music performances, a new coLAB play in collaboration with our community of Casa Familiar, arts and crafts for kids, a puppet show, workshops, and more. Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Globe’s outdoor Copley Plaza in Balboa Park. This free, family-friendly event is a festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring Aztec dance performances by Danza Azteca Kuauhkoalt, live music performances by Zhiely Monraz and guitarist Ricardo Arredondo, a puppet play by Gastón Morineau and Veronica Burgess, and our new CoLAB play written by Crystal Mercado and members of our community partners at Casa Familiar, directed by our very own Valeria Vega. We will also have a puppet parade and drum workshop led by The San Diego Guild of Puppetry and Drummers Without Borders, and the talented visual artist Natalie Gonzalez presenting her original art piece titled “Ojos de Dios” (Huichol “God’s Eyes”), will also lead a workshop for audience members to create their own piece to take home. Nathalie Joachim is a GRAMMY-nominated performer and composer. The Haitian-American artist is hailed for being “a fresh and invigorating cross-cultural voice” (The Nation). Her creative practice centers an authentic commitment to storytelling and human connectivity while advocating for social change and cultural awareness, gaining her the reputation of being “powerful and unpretentious.” (The New York Times) Ms. Joachim is an Assistant Professor of Composition at Princeton University and is regularly commissioned to write for orchestra, instrumental and vocal ensembles, dance, and interdisciplinary theater. Recent and upcoming highlights include new works for the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, Grant Park Music Festival and more. Her landmark project, Fanm d’Ayiti, an evening-length work for flute, voice, string quartet and electronics, celebrates and explores her personal Haitian heritage and received a GRAMMY nomination for Best World Music Album. Joachim’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Ki moun ou ye - an intimate examination of ancestral connection and self - was co-released by Nonesuch Records and New Amsterdam Records in early 2024, and deemed “one of the year’s most creatively and personally ambitious albums.” (SPIN Magazine) Joachim is a 2024-25 Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum of Modern Art, a United States Artist Fellow and co-founder of the critically acclaimed duo Flutronix.
