In 2011 Davina released her first full length, all-original album, Black Cloud. It was named one of the 10 best releases of the year by the Minneapolis Star & Tribune and awarded 4 ½ stars from Downbeat Magazine. Her next release, in 2014, Sunshine, hit number 13 on the Billboard Blues Chart and led the band to landing a performance on the hit BBC2 show Later with Jools Holland. Davina and the Vagabonds’ shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: she is a true original. Bringing you 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals, which lend themselves to the American Songbook, the band brings edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears. This rollicking quintet is held together by Sowers’ keyboard playing, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombone horn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago. This has set the Vagabonds apart at festivals in Thunder Bay, Ontario; Sighisoara, Romania; Sierre, Switzerland; Kemi, Finland; the 2012 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival; Vache de Blues in France, and the North Sea Jazz Festival. At the core of the cultural tradition is the community altar, a symbol signifying love and remembrance. The South Bay neighborhood encourages the community to participate in the touching tradition by bringing photos of loved ones who have passed and place them in the neighborhood’s community altar. As a holiday dedicated to celebrating the lives of those who have passed, the altar will be a collection of memories that will be cherished by all. Along with the community altar, there will be chances to win cash prizes by participating in the contests hosted by the Downtown Chula Vista Association. California Western School of Law's Scholar in Residence, Professor Priscilla Ocen, will facilitate a vibrant discussion on the topics of Environment, Immigration, and Policing by scholars at the forefront of vital Social Justice conversations. Fulbright Scholar Priscilla Ocen, Professor of Law at Loyola Law School, teaches criminal procedure, reproductive justice, and a seminar on race, gender and the law. Her work explores the ways in which the intersection of race, gender and class make women of color vulnerable to various forms of violence and criminalization. She is a Fulbright Scholar and is teaching a 6-week seminar at CWSL entitled, "Reproductive Justice." CWSL Professors Behzadi Cárdenas, Dadhania, and Fields will present their works in progress on "Cultural Heritage Justice," the "Linguistic Abuse of Migrants," and "Rights Without Cops." The Colloquium will be held in classroom 2B at 350 Cedar St, San Diego from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on September 15, 2023. This event will be hybrid. She studied Comparative Literature, Classical, Slavic, Jewish, and Media Studies at the universities of Kharkiv, Regensburg, Bari, and San Diego and received her PhD in Slavic and Jewish Studies from the University of Regensburg in 2019. The Osher at SDSU community invites you to join us for a special event featuring guest lecturer, Kate Liszka. She is the Benson and Pamela Harer Fellow in Egyptology and Professor of History at California State University, San Bernardino. Since 2014, Kate has directed the Wadi el-Hudi Expedition to the Eastern Desert, along with Bryan Kraemer and Meredith Brand. She received her PhD in 2012 in Egyptian Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania with her study of the Medjay. From 2012-2015, Kate was a Costen Fellow and member of the Society of Fellows at Princeton University.
