"Cups to Connections: Global Gestures of Hospitality" embraces the art of hospitality and how the act of sharing a drink has the extraordinary power to bring people together, fostering a deep sense of community and belonging. Highlighting a wide range of global traditions, the objects in Cups to Connections tell the stories of heritage and craft from across time and cultures. Hospitality is the bridge that forges connections – each custom unique, yet the act of inviting others to join for a beverage, a universal language. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with The House of Pacific Relations, a consortium of houses located in Balboa Park representing 31 cultures – bringing various cultural groups together to foster and cultivate a spirit of understanding, tolerance, and goodwill. Make plans to attend a weekend of excitement as the Belgian Waffle Ride and Unroad Expo make their highly anticipated return to North City on April 27-28! This unique event promises a vibrant festival atmosphere featuring food, craft beer tastings from acclaimed local breweries, music, and more. Enjoy brewpub favorites from Cohn Restaurant Group’s Draft Republic, Belgian Ale from Lost Abbey Brewing, and craft brews on tap from acclaimed Tarantula Hill, the newest brewery addition to North City. Draft Republic will be serving favorites like Chicken Al Pastor and Brisket soft tacos, homemade Bratwurst sandwiches, and more, alongside a variety of canned cocktails, wine, and other beverages. Attendees can also indulge in freshly made waffles, paying homage to the event's namesake and adding an extra layer of fun and deliciousness to the festivities. On Sunday, April 28, spectators can watch the thrilling race action unfold from the Draft Republic patio and Expo grounds, providing an up-close view of the cycling excitement. Join artist Natasha Kozaily (b. 1985) as she shares songs, stories, and art from the Cayman Islands that raised her and inspires her work today. Participants will first learn about the rich heritage of this Caribbean archipelago before learning how to weave a rag rug, inspired by the traditional folk craft of the Cayman Islands.
