Gilbert Castellanos is a nationally renowned San Diego-based musician, composer, curator, educator and arranger, and one of the country’s top-call jazz trumpeters. For over a decade, Castellanos has been a member of The Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, performing around the world and recording with the acclaimed big band. He is a San Diego Music Awards six-time Best Jazz Artist and Artist of The Year, with partnerships with The San Diego Symphony, The San Diego Museum of Art, and The San Diego Ballet.   • Coastal Roots Farm, a nonprofit Jewish community farm and education center in Encinitas is teaming up with the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center and Limmud North America for a special “Express Freely, Art-Making Day” on the Farm, Sunday, Mar. 31 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The community is invited for a day of community artmaking and creative exploration around the central theme of rebirth. Each participant will get to participate in two art tracks, choosing between creative writing, photography, theater/movement, choral singing, and visual art. To make this day extra special, the Farm has commissioned five teaching artists from across the U.S. to guide the sessions. No prior experience with the arts is necessary; all that is needed is the desire to try something new and the inner ok to let yourself play. This program is geared towards adults; kids aged 14 and up are also welcome. Two of the tracks will be particularly family friendly.   • Please join us to hear from Peter Sinclair, Media Director of the Dark Snow Project, who will present an overview of the status of the Greenland ice sheet and the challenges and importance of implementing clean energy in the Midwest. There is no charge for this online event but please register in advance. Peter Sinclair, as Media Director of the Dark Snow Project, an international scientific effort focused on the Greenland ice sheet, has spent a lot of time on and around the Big Ice with top-level science teams. Mr. Sinclair will talk about what scientists have been learning about the dynamics and unique vulnerability of ice sheets to climate change. The presentation will include vivid video, interviews, and drone footage shot on location over the last decade. Mr. Sinclair will also describe the ongoing war to site clean energy across the American heartland and where the war to decarbonize America will be won or lost in the coming decade.   • Mama’s Kitchen is hosting its 33rd annual Mama’s Day fundraiser, a culinary event featuring San Diego’s best chefs, restaurants, catering companies, hotels, and more, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront on Friday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. The event features unlimited tasting from participating culinary partners. Attendees will also be treated to live entertainment from local artists and musicians, pop-up booths from retailers, a silent auction, and a photo booth to commemorate the evening. All proceeds from Mama’s Day are funneled directly to the non-profit’s delivery services, allowing for more critically ill San Diegans to receive free medically-tailored meal deliveries.
