They are writers of music as well, and you will find that the inspiration behind their originals comes from these classic eras/genres. Raggedly sophisticated, The Garner’s mysterious sweetness will entrance even the most immovable listener. With Lorelei on Tenor Ukulele, Jon on Gypsy Guitar, and both singing from the deep wells of our booming hearts, our music will transport you back when times were harder, yet the good times, more colorful, vibrant, and bold. She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well, sort of. Lorelei, vocals and ukulele, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon, vocals and guitar, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October, 2015. Their whole life is music. Pet portraits will mingle with family ancestors; faces of joy may contrast with downcast eyes of sorrow; celebrities draw the eye, while everyday people have a brief moment of attention. Come take a deeper look at the story told by each portrait and self-portrait. You'll look into the eyes of real and imaginary individuals and perhaps see yourself in their story. About The Zzymzzy Quartet Rhymes with "Whimsy" The guys from the Zzymzzy Quartet have simple ambitions: they just want to play it like it was when it was unamplified, melodic, swinging, dreamy, full of sly surprise. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: - Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals - Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals - Matt Gill - Clarinet - Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ART HURTS Records released their second CD, Petite Fleur which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians. About Steph Johnson Steph Johnson is an award-winning, multi-dimensional recording artist and activist whose music deftly blends jazz, soul, funk and blues. Through her 20-year music career, Steph has recorded five studio albums. Her latest album "So In Love", is a collection of Johnson's favorite jazz standards and ballads. The 10-track record features pianist Josh Nelson (Natalie Cole), guitarist Anthony Wilson (Diana Krall), trumpeter Chris Lawrence, bassist Rob Thorsen and drummer Richard Sellers. “With her recent release of 'So In Love,' Steph continues her spiral upward towards bright, musical horizons. This may be her best recording to date.” — DeeDee McNeil. LA Jazz Scene Growing up, Steph was influenced by her grandmother’s favorite singers: Ike and Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder; and by the ’70s icons beloved by her mother, including James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. She discovered jazz through Miles Davis' classic album, ‘Kind of Blue’, which led her to the great female jazz vocalists: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn. “Johnson’s core strength is as a communicator with rhythmic depth and smoky, pliant power…her sweet yearning vocal really soars." — Robert Bush, Jazz critic Johnson performs regularly throughout Southern California and the Western United States. She is currently working on new material for her next project. When she’s not working on music, Steph directs her creative energy towards social activism. In 2016 she co-founded Voices of Our City Choir, with fellow musician Nina Deering. What began as an organic collaboration between local musicians and people experiencing homelessness has grown into an internationally recognized performance ensemble and innovative nonprofit that uses music and arts to amplify the voices of people impacted by homelessness. Come enjoy some fun conversation in Yiddish, practicing asking and answering questions and playing games. This is a no-pressure, easygoing class. The class is “drop-in” style, so feel free to attend all six sessions or as many as you wish. Everything will be presented in Yiddish with transliteration, as well as in English. There is no homework, but optional review materials will be sent out after each class. Sessions will be recorded upon request.
