Everyone in the community is invited to attend Wings of Hope, hosted by The Elizabeth Hospice, on Sunday, April 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. This event will take place at the California Center for the Arts, located at 340 N. Escondido Blvd in Escondido. Attendees will have the opportunity to honor and celebrate the special people who have touched their lives. Admission is free. Registration is required by April 19 online at www.elizabethhospice.org/wings or by calling 760.796.3708. Attendees will receive a butterfly for release, listen to live music, hear uplifting messages from The Elizabeth Hospice’s grief support team, and enjoy sweet treats. The Elizabeth Hospice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit healthcare leader, has been providing hospice care, palliative care and grief support services to children and adults in San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County since 1978. The organization’s highly trained grief counselors help children and adults understand their feelings and thoughts and guide them through the process of coping with the death of a loved one. Grief support services are available to everyone in the community, including those who do not have a patient affiliation with The Elizabeth Hospice. No one needing these services has ever been turned away for financial reasons. In support of the organization’s nonprofit mission, a donation of $50 is suggested to reserve a Painted Lady Butterfly. Presented by Oceanside Theatre Company, the Oceanside Historical Society, and Bliss Tea & Treats, this original multimedia theater performance highlights Oceanside Black Firsts. While the setting will be in the 1960s with the changes made during the Civil Rights Movement, and the turmoil of the Vietnam War, the production seeks to show the parallel of the very real struggles still being faced today. Stories will include the first black teachers in Oceanside’s school district, Oceanside and San Diego County's first black mayor Terry Johnson, the first black police chief Kedrick Sadler, and the first black President of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, Robbie Hass. Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Poetry, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this final workshop of the Certificate in Poetry program, the student will concentrate on the design of a publishable manuscript. The student will continue workshopping poems, reading and analyzing books of poetry, providing valuable comment and feedback on each other’s manuscripts. Further, the student will discover publishing sources for individual poems and contests for chapbook and complete book manuscripts, the necessary recordkeeping for this endeavor, and practice how to give a professional poetry reading. For students not ready to compile a manuscript, each class also includes a writing prompt, short lesson or introduction to a poet, and a read & critique session. Each participant will choose one poetry craft book and submit by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Students will prepare a number of copies of their completed manuscript for distribution to the other students at the end of class three. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop for both individual poems and manuscripts. Objectives: - Upon completion of this workshop, you will have: - Finalized the formation of a publishable manuscript - Developed a poetry record-keeping procedure - Submitted poems to three different publications - Participated in a read and critique of student manuscripts - Practiced giving a professional poetry reading - Read and analyzed one book of poetry craft Week 1: Introduction to Poetry V. The San Diego Automotive Museum and the San Diego Blood Bank are teaming up to save lives through their annual blood drive on March 9th from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the San Diego Automotive Museum. Last year's event resulted in the saving of 35 lives, a testament to the community's generosity and support. As a token of appreciation, all donors will receive a free family membership to the San Diego Automotive Museum, which guarantees free unlimited admission for one year for two adults and four children in the same household as well as two guest passes. While appointments are preferred for participation in this life-saving initiative, walk-ins are also welcome, subject to availability. The San Diego Blood Bank must collect more than 350 units of blood each day to meet the needs of local patients of all ages, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds throughout Southern California. These patients are struggling with life-threatening medical conditions including cancer and other blood disorders, severe burns, organ transplants, emergency surgery, trauma, childbirth complications and more. All blood types are needed.
