Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “The Story of Spoons,” and Ken Albala, at 10:30 am June 15, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. The Story of Spoons recounts the journey of food historian Ken Albala into the world of slojd carving, an entirely new area of food history and practical hands-on research. How and why both historic and contemporary spoons elide physically and aesthetically with pottery and recipes he also makes is the subject of his next book project Wooden Spoons, Clay Pots and Recipes from Scratch. Ken Albala is Tully Knoles Endowed Professor of History at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He was the 2023 Distinguished Faculty Award recipient for the University and won the 2024 Hoefer award for Faculty-Student Collaboration for an article on the history of lasagna. His next book which will be out this fall is entitled Opulent Nosh: A Cookbook for Audacious Appetites. Joel Rafael has been writing and performing for over 50 years. His bio takes us on a tour of up and down the West Coast, eventually landing in Encinitas, where he also began a lifetime friendship with songwriter Jack Tempchin. During the late 1970s, Joel performed around southern California in various groups. In the early 1980s, he found a niche in San Diego County as an opener for nationally touring acts for several local promoters. Shortly after, in 1981, he recorded his first album "Dharma Bums," and in the early 1990s, the Joel Rafael Band was born. Joel performed for years at the Woody Guthrie Festival and, in 2003, he released an album of all Woody Guthrie tunes, "Woodeye." Within two years he had recorded another album of Guthrie songs, "Woodyboye," and this one included four Woody Guthrie co-writes with lyrics given to him by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie. As a solo performer and with his band, Joel has opened shows and shared stages with artists including Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, John Lee Hooker, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, John Trudell, Laura Nyro, Kris Kristofferson, Dar Williams, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Odetta, and Taj Mahal. In 2015, Joel released a ninth album, "Baladista," delivering ten essential ballads that embrace and celebrate the human spirit and reflect the half-century journey of an American songwriter. His latest work, "Rose Avenue," released in 2019, gracefully defines him and his contribution to the American canon. Jack Tempchin is a legendary hit songwriter, whose compositions "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "Already Gone" are synonymous with the southern California sound. These songs can be found on the Eagles’ compilation Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, which the RIAA named the Best-Selling U.S. Album of the 20th Century. Jack’s songs have been performed or recorded by artists including George Jones, Buck Owens, Emmylou Harris, Glen Campbell, Jackson Browne, Dwight Yoakam, Linda Ronstadt, Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Tanya Tucker, Richie Havens, Sammy Kershaw, Kate Wolf, and Tom Rush. Jack has also performed live with three Eagles: Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit. He has also played with Poco, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Chicago, Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen, Jimmy Webb, Al Kooper, Kenny Loggins, Karla Bonoff, Christopher Cross, and Dolly Parton. In the mid-1990s, Jack toured as the opening act for Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band at Radio City Music Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In the 1980s, Jack co-wrote a dozen radio hits for Glenn Frey’s solo career. Tempchin/Frey co-writes include Top 40 hits "Smuggler’s Blues" and "You Belong to The City" for the original MIAMI VICE TV show soundtrack. Jack’s songs are featured in such films as "The Big Lebowski" and "Thelma & Louise." In 2019, Jack was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Surrealist Mexican painter, known for her vibrant colors, unflinching self-portraits, works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico, and her celebration of its indigenous culture. In this lecture, Professor of Humanities Gwenyth Mapes will look at her life and some of her art. Dr. Mapes is a Professor of Humanities at Grossmont College and taught as an Assistant Professor of Humanities at the University of Montana in Missoula.

The Psychedelic Furs and The Jesus and Mary Chain bring their distinctive British rock to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. The Psychedelic Furs may not have invented rock & roll per se, but their influence since arriving on the post-punk scorched-earth landscape four decades ago has reverberated and resonated among all those who cherish the sweet-and-sour spot where rawness and romanticism meet. Born out of the UK post-punk scene and led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on college and alternative radio, scoring a flurry of major hits with "Love My Way," "Pretty in Pink," "Heaven," "The Ghost in You" and “Heartbreak Beat”. One of the most influential bands of their generation and beyond, The Jesus and Mary Chain mark their 40th anniversary in 2024 with a new album, Glasgow Eyes. Learn the latest advances in caring for patients with orthopedic and sports medicine injuries at a daylong symposium, featuring expert presentations and discussions. The event will bring together sports medicine physicians; former professional athletes and coaches from Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association; local team general managers; athletic trainers; physical therapists; and others on the front lines of sports and athletic care. Topics will include a thorough analysis of overhead throwing athletes, such as baseball pitchers; considerations for contact sports such as football, rugby and hockey; tracking and managing mental stress in athletes; overall athletic development, performance training and injury risk reduction; and health preservation after an athletic career. Breakfast and lunch will be included. Presented by the San Diego Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Fellowship.
