The Psychedelic Furs and The Jesus and Mary Chain bring their distinctive British rock to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. The Psychedelic Furs may not have invented rock & roll per se, but their influence since arriving on the post-punk scorched-earth landscape four decades ago has reverberated and resonated among all those who cherish the sweet-and-sour spot where rawness and romanticism meet. Born out of the UK post-punk scene and led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on college and alternative radio, scoring a flurry of major hits with "Love My Way," "Pretty in Pink," "Heaven," "The Ghost in You" and “Heartbreak Beat”. One of the most influential bands of their generation and beyond, The Jesus and Mary Chain mark their 40th anniversary in 2024 with a new album, Glasgow Eyes. Released on March 8 by Fuzz Club and distributed worldwide by Cooking Vinyl, this is the band’s first studio album since Damage and Joy (2017). Learn the latest advances in caring for patients with orthopedic and sports medicine injuries at a daylong symposium, featuring expert presentations and discussions. The event will bring together sports medicine physicians; former professional athletes and coaches from Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association; local team general managers; athletic trainers; physical therapists; and others on the front lines of sports and athletic care. Topics will include a thorough analysis of overhead throwing athletes, such as baseball pitchers; considerations for contact sports such as football, rugby and hockey; tracking and managing mental stress in athletes; overall athletic development, performance training and injury risk reduction; and health preservation after an athletic career. Breakfast and lunch will be included. Presented by the San Diego Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Fellowship. The symposium will be held Friday, July 26 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Alexandira at Torrey Pines, 10996 Torreyana Rd., San Diego 92121. After years of ignoring indigenous peoples, the U.S. environmental movement has embraced them as partners in protecting the integrity of ecosystems and as teachers in modeling a truly sustainable lifestyle. What are some of the traditions of earth care that the Kumeyaay lived out for thousands of years here in San Diego County and how did those practices grow out of their religion? For this FREE event sponsored by the Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice, former ICEJ Chairperson Rev. Dr. Beth Johnson will interview several members of the Kumeyaay nation including eco-justice activists Bobby Wallace and Sarahmarie Llyemewaa Redfern. Mr. Wallace and Ms. Redfern will also reflect on their life journeys as activists, direct us toward local eco-justice issues, and address what true justice from the U.S. might look like for the Indigenous.
