Don’t get left trail-ing behind and join the City of Santee for a fun day of nature exploration! Santee Discovery Day is a brand-new event hosted by the City of Santee and is an opportunity for all to enjoy the Walker Preserve Trail, Santee’s most family-friendly and a popular trail in San Diego County. The event will take place on Saturday, January 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Walker Preserve (9500 Magnolia Avenue, Santee). Interact with nature-themed booths and take in the scenery as the San Diego River spans the entire length of the trail. Participants can enter an opportunity drawing by collecting signatures at each booth on the passport card; stop by the City’s Information Booth to grab yours and embark on the journey with us! Grab a bite to eat from a local food truck while letting the kids master the rock wall. Attendees are encouraged to either park along Magnolia Avenue or Chubb Lane and walk to the west end of Walker Preserve to access the event. The History Center has hosted the exhibition "Nathan Harrison: Born Enslaved, Died a San Diego Legend" since spring 2021. As we enter the final stretch of what has been a fascinating look at both the the story of this famed Palomar Mountain homesteader Nathan Harrison, and the process of discovery, we are proud to host one final program featuring Prof. Mallios, as well as archaeology grad student Jamie Bastide. Dr. Mallios and Jamie Bastide will discuss the recent rediscovery of Harrison’s lost shotgun and place this extraordinary find in the context of self-armament, masculinity, and identity in late 19th-century San Diego County. Drawing on recent insights from the Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project, a 20-year endeavor that has uncovered nearly 60,000 artifacts and revealed numerous new insights into this legendary local pioneer, they will also detail how the weapon was relocated and its significance for the region. About Amanda Portela Amanda started her musical career in San Francisco, she frequented many an open mic and one in particular at the 16th and Mission Bart Station. It was there that she was inspired to begin her path as a singer songwriter. A few years later Amanda found herself at Mesa College studying jazz and singing for the Mesa Big Band then later on joining a Congolese band in 2010 called Bateke Beat. Amanda’s musical endeavors lead her to performing at various clubs and festivals in San Diego. Portela, used her new found passion for singing Jazz and started a popular “Jazz Jam” at a Wine Bar in the heart of Hillcrest. Shortly their after, Amanda joined the Indie rock band by the name of Viva Apollo. Viva Apollo was notorious within the local San Diego music circuit, performing in all kinds of venues including a late night local cable access show, Tonight in San Diego. The Wilkinson McAllister Duo is pleased to present a variety of jazz repertoire, from original compositions to their own arrangements of classic jazz standards. Wayne Wilkinson is a headliner jazz guitarist who performs and tours across the country and internationally. For over four decades, Wayne has shared the stage with iconic jazz musicians, world-class performers and a President of the United States. An artist with Benedetto guitars, GHS Strings, and Jim Dunlop picks, Wilkinson is known for his high-octane melodic playing which world-renowned jazz trombonist Bill Watrous noted “is the greatest guitar playing I’ve ever heard.” Colin McAllister is Director of Humanities at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. His performances as a guitarist and conductor have been hailed as ‘sparkling…delivered superbly’ (San Francisco Chronicle), ‘ravishing’ (San Diego Union Tribune) and ‘an amazing tour de force’ (San Diego Story), and he has recorded on the MicroFest, Summit, Innova, Centaur, Naxos, Albany, Old King Cole, Vienna Modern Masters, Carrier, and Tzadik labels.
