The History Center has hosted the exhibition "Nathan Harrison: Born Enslaved, Died a San Diego Legend" since spring 2021. As we enter the final stretch of what has been a fascinating look at both the the story of this famed Palomar Mountain homesteader Nathan Harrison, and the process of discovery, we are proud to host one final program featuring Prof. Mallios, as well as archaeology grad student Jamie Bastide. Dr. Mallios and Jamie Bastide will discuss the recent rediscovery of Harrison’s lost shotgun and place this extraordinary find in the context of self-armament, masculinity, and identity in late 19th-century San Diego County. Drawing on recent insights from the Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project, a 20-year endeavor that has uncovered nearly 60,000 artifacts and revealed numerous new insights into this legendary local pioneer, they will also detail how the weapon was relocated and its significance for the region. About Amanda Portela Amanda started her musical career in San Francisco, she frequented many an open mic and one in particular at the 16th and Mission Bart Station. It was there that she was inspired to begin her path as a singer songwriter. A few years later Amanda found herself at Mesa College studying jazz and singing for the Mesa Big Band then later on joining a Congolese band in 2010 called Bateke Beat. Amanda’s musical endeavors lead her to performing at various clubs and festivals in San Diego. Portela, used her new found passion for singing Jazz and started a popular “Jazz Jam” at a Wine Bar in the heart of Hillcrest. Shortly their after, Amanda joined the Indie rock band by the name of Viva Apollo. Viva Apollo was notorious within the local San Diego music circuit, performing in all kinds of venues including a late night local cable access show, Tonight in San Diego. The Wilkinson McAllister Duo is pleased to present a variety of jazz repertoire, from original compositions to their own arrangements of classic jazz standards. Wayne Wilkinson is a headliner jazz guitarist who performs and tours across the country and internationally. For over four decades, Wayne has shared the stage with iconic jazz musicians, world-class performers and a President of the United States. An artist with Benedetto guitars, GHS Strings, and Jim Dunlop picks, Wilkinson is known for his high-octane melodic playing which world-renowned jazz trombonist Bill Watrous noted “is the greatest guitar playing I’ve ever heard.” Colin McAllister is Director of Humanities at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The biggest event in classical music returns to San Diego, June 20-29. The Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival, led by Maestro Michael Francis, is the largest gathering of concertmasters and principal players from the nation’s top orchestras, who come together in San Diego every summer to form one remarkable orchestra for a limited six-concert series. This year, the orchestra will return to two La Jolla venues where it first held performances in 2023: the UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater and The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. The Military Spouse Association of Camp Pendleton (MSACP) is a non-profit, all-volunteer, service organization, committed to helping our military families and surrounding communities. We are planning our 2024 fundraiser and want to personally invite you to join us! Our 24th Annual Margaritaville Benefit & Auction will take place on March 16, 2024 at Pacific Views Event Center, located aboard Camp Pendleton at 202850, San Jacinto Rd, Oceanside, CA 92058. Margaritaville is a live and silent auction and includes live entertainment, dinner, and opportunity giveaways. This event is attended by over 200 Senior Leadership, Marines, Sailors, their significant others and families, and local business leaders. Each year, the MSACP raises funds to provide college scholarships for military dependents stationed aboard or living near Camp Pendleton. The MSACP also awards Community Enrichment Grants to local organizations and projects that support our military families. Organizations include Semper Fi Fund, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego, Dogs on Deployment, United through Reading, and more. All proceeds from the Benefit & Auction directly fund these efforts.
