Many people find Modern Calligraphy attractive to learn because it allows them to create beautiful, fun, and hand-crafted letters that are unique and personal. Modern Calligraphy is often characterized by its use of thick and thin lines, giving the letters a dynamic and expressive quality. Enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages.Space is limited, so be sure to register early. *PLEASE NOTE: We offer two separate workshops focusing on Modern Calligraphy. Join us on Wednesday evenings for a restorative yoga session at the Museum of Us! All are welcome, regardless of physical ability, experience, or age. Classes are held in the Museum rotunda by yoga instructor, Lunita Velásquez. The evening classes promote relaxation and restoration by strengthening the mind-body connection with deep stretching, breathwork, and a welcoming space. All are welcome, regardless of physical ability or yoga experience. People under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one for your practice. We encourage guests to wear layers and bring blocks, blankets, and/or any additional yoga accessories they would prefer that will support their practice. The Museum will have a limited number of clean blankets, blocks, and mats available to lend out if needed. The class will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. Please plan ample time for parking within Balboa Park. Museum doors will open at 5:15 p.m. for check-in and to set up your mat. From the KPBS/Arts newsletter: Playwright Lauren Gunderson's "dark revenge comedy" is inspired by one line of stage direction in Shakespeare's "The WInter's Tale" and follows a woman, Nan, and an unlikely set of best friends as they plan an over-the-top and, uh, grotesque "exit" from an abusive marriage. Directed by Kira Blaskovich, it's on stage at Coronado Playhouse Aug. 16 through Sept. 8. $24+. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: After years of abuse, Nan is finally ready to teach her abusive husband Kyle a lesson. With some assistance by her longtime best friend Simon (acting as her emotional, and actual, cheerleader) and an optimistic stripper named Sweetheart, Nan wants to make Kyle understand what he’s done is wrong before taking her final revenge. They hatch a plan inspired by Shakespeare’s immortal stage direction in The Winter’s Tale: “Exit, pursued by a bear.” With a flair for theatrics, the group tapes a drunk Kyle to a chair and reenact scenes from the couple’s painful past. In the piece de resistance, they plan to cover the room in meat and honey so Kyle will be mauled by a bear. Through this night of emotional trials and ridiculous theatrics, Nan and Kyle are both freed from their past in this dark and smart revenge comedy. Subtitled as “A Revenge Comedy,” Gunderson delivers nothing less, as the fast paced action screams towards Kyle’s fate. As the laughs roll, Gunderson cleverly confronts the issue of domestic abuse but at the same time walks the fine line between painful tragedy and unseemly comedy by examining multiple perspectives of those involved, each flawed, contradictory, and human. Exit, Pursued by a Bear is the first of three plays in the author’s “Shakespeare Cycle”, a series of contemporary comedies based on Shakespeare’s plays. Alfredo Rodríguez is a GRAMMY-nominated pianist, composer, arranger, and producer. After meeting Quincy Jones at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006 and receiving an offer to work together, Alfredo emigrated to the US to pursue his dream of being an internationally acclaimed musician. Over the past decade, Alfredo has gone from a local Cuban artist to a globally recognized GRAMMY nominee with five critically acclaimed releases on tastemaker imprint Mack Avenue Records: "Sounds of Space" (2011), "The Invasion Parade" (2014), "Tocororo" (2016), "The Little Dream" (2018), and "Duologue" (2019) with percussionist Pedrito Martinez. Beyond his accomplishments, Rodriguez’s ability to “play stories” on the keys allows him to connect with his listeners on a deeply personal level. His albums, including The Invasion Parade, Tocororo, and Duologue, reflect his memories of Cuba, his experiences as an immigrant, and his journey of self-discovery through music. He’s been featured by All Things Considered, Downbeat, the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Wall Street Journal among many others, and performed for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert. Rodriguez continues to share his music along with his impactful message of perseverance and cross culturalization on an international tour, while sharing a variety of viral social media videos in which he plays well-known compositions in a Cuban timba style. Love Your Wetlands Day is an opportunity to explore UC San Diego’s protected Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve in Mission Bay while also learning about the importance of coastal wetlands, the climate threats they face, and the ways local communities are working to restore and protect them. Uniquely located in the densely populated urban area, Kendall-Frost Marsh is a valuable laboratory and popular component of the University of California’s Natural Reserve System, a library of ecosystems throughout California representing most of the state's major habitats. Activities will take place throughout the day and are family friendly: Guided marsh and kayak clean ups Guided birding Booths from environmental organizations Educational presentations by local scientists Speeches by elected officials, and cultural activities with Indigenous leaders Native planting Fish seining The event will run from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Please note: NO DOGS ALLOWED AT THE EVENT Minors can not participate without a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. The Super Dentists love to celebrate the holidays, and this year, they will be spreading holiday cheer by transforming their Kearny Mesa location into a Winter Wonderland. Kids are encouraged to come dressed in their ugliest sweaters and enter a contest to win awesome prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, judged by DJ Rick Morton of Z90.3.
