About Cobby Brzeski Cobby Brzeski is a multi-genre, multi-instrumental musical artist and songwriter originally from Naples, Florida, and is now based in San Diego, CA. Cobby’s firm grasp of harmony, playful melody writing, and charming voice has created new fresh new environment for jazz to shine once again. While mainly focused on Jazz in the Swing Idiom, Cobby’s is equally versed in a wide variety of musical genres ranging from Indie-Acoustic, R&B, Pop, etc.. Described as a vintage girl in a modern world, Cobby’s music possesses a natural gift for sensitive, relatable storytelling and is a blend of influences from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Helen Forrest, The Andrew Sisters and others, twisted with modern influences like Jason Mraz, Cyrille Aimee, and Post Modern Jukebox. Cobby has performed her music all over the East Coast, California and has been gaining recognition as an emerging jazz artist. About Amanda Portela Amanda started her musical career in San Francisco, she frequented many an open mic and one in particular at the 16th and Mission Bart Station. It was there that she was inspired to begin her path as a singer songwriter. A few years later Amanda found herself at Mesa College studying jazz and singing for the Mesa Big Band then later on joining a Congolese band in 2010 called Bateke Beat. Amanda’s musical endeavors lead her to performing at various clubs and festivals in San Diego. Portela, used her new found passion for singing Jazz and started a popular “Jazz Jam” at a Wine Bar in the heart of Hillcrest. Shortly thereafter, Amanda joined the Indie rock band by the name of Viva Apollo. Viva Apollo was notorious within the local San Diego music circuit, performing in all kinds of venues including a late night local cable access show, Tonight in San Diego.   • The Hungry Dog Dash is Back After Biggest Year Ever! The Point Loma High School Cross Country team and PLHS Pointer Association Cross Country Boosters (PLHS PA-XC) are bringing back the Hungry Dog Dash Community 5K race on Sunday, February 11, 2024 at 8 a.m. This flat, fast and fun course at the waterfront park in Liberty Station is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise with family and friends before Super Bowl festivities in the afternoon. The first Hungry Dog Dash was held in 2011 as a fundraiser for the PLHS Cross Country Team. After 2 years off due to Covid, the 11th annual race in 2023 hosted more than 500 participants - the biggest year yet. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to join - even four-legged friends. The Pointer mascot will be onsite to keep adults, kids and canines company as they run along the water and loop past the USS Recruit. The USATF Certified and Sanctioned Course draws competitors of all levels from the San Diego area racing community to casual first-timers from around the city. Every in-person registrant will receive a high-performance Hungry Dog Dash t-shirt, goodie bag and dog tags.   • Get ready for an incredible night of salsa and bachata dancing, musica and fun at Queen Bee’s on Sunday, December 31st! Starting at 7:00 p.m., instructors Michael and Rosey will lead a lively salsa and bachata class of all skill levels. Following the classes, the floor will ignite at 8:00 p.m. with the main room devoted to electrifying salsa beats and the 2nd room coming alive with the sultry melodies of bachata and Latin hits. Renowned DJs, DJ Mambo and DJ Basic, will fill the building with salsa and bachata tunes throughout the thrilling night, setting the stage for Hector Rivera Y Su Orquesta to perform salsa classics and original compositions starting at 10:30 p.m. Drinks and food will be available to purchase throughout the night. With Lorelei on Tenor Ukulele, Jon on Gypsy Guitar, and both singing from the deep wells of our booming hearts, our music will transport you back when times were harder, yet the good times, more colorful, vibrant, and bold. She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well, sort of. Lorelei, vocals and ukulele, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon, vocals and guitar, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October, 2015. Their whole life is music. They gig, teach, compose, and record.
