Panel Information: "Diplomacy and Lucha Libre: Same Battles, Different Arenas" As part of the exhibit "Sangre, Sudor y Mito: The Art and Tradition of Mexican Lucha Libre," the multifaceted Mexican-American professional wrestler Thunder Rosa and the Consul General of Mexico in San Diego, Alicia Kerber, will hold a conversation about the challenges that Mexican women face in careers as different as professional wrestlers and career diplomats. The history of Mexican luchadoras as part of the lucha libre universe was neglected and overlooked, with female matches being banned for more than 30 years. Similarly, Mexican women diplomats have faced discrimination through the years, with fewer opportunities and unbalanced representation. Celebrate the Season with Handbuilt Ghosts! Friday, October 3, from 5-7 p.m. Ages 12+ welcome! Join us for the next edition of Clay Happy Hour! In this Clay Happy Hour session, we’ll create your own ceramic ghosts — little spirits that can double as tea light holders or an incense cover. In this clay happy hour, you’ll learn to handbuild and personalize your ghosts with cutouts and details. Students may create either one medium size or two small ghosts per sign-up, time permitting. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking for a new way to unwind, this open studio setting is a great chance to get your hands messy, meet new people, and let your creativity ring out. All materials are provided, and you’ll get to take home your handmade creations after they’re fired and ready for pick-up in 3-4 weeks. Over the course of eight sessions, students will begin their journey into Yiddishland, exploring both the language and get a taste of its rich culture. The course begins with learning to read and write the alef-beys (alphabet). From there, students will soon be ready to read selections from Yiddish literature, sing traditional Yiddish folksongs, and practice everyday expressions. Students will learn how to introduce themselves, share their stories, and describe their personal connections to Yiddish. All learning materials will be provided by the teacher. He has studied Yiddish at University College London, and courses in Tel Aviv, Berlin and Paris. He has led Yiddish poetry courses online for Babel’s Blessing Language School and in-person workshops at the Shtetl Berlin Festival, the Maison de la Culture Yiddish and the Yiddish Sof-Vokh UK, which he also helps to organise. He teaches at the summer programme ‘Ot Azoy’ and recently completed a pedagogy fellowship at the Yiddish Book Center (Amherst, MA).
