The Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT) has announced its 28th San Diego International Summit, which will bring together international leaders to explore innovative approaches for preventing and addressing violence and trauma. The Summit will take place from August 26 - 30, at the Hyatt Regency at Aventine in La Jolla. IVAT, a non-profit 501 © 3 organization founded by Robert Geffner, Ph.D., ABN, ABPP, in 1984, aims to improve the quality of life for individuals on local, national, and international levels by promoting violence-free living. With the theme of “Promoting Resilience Amid Global Challenges,” this year’s Summit will attract 1,000 attendees from diverse backgrounds, who will engage in insightful presentations, interactive workshops, and networking events focused on evidence-based solutions to violence and trauma. The Summit will focus on topics such as child abuse, domestic violence, adverse childhood experiences, children exposed to violence, at-risk youth, criminal justice issues, sexual assault, unserved and underserved populations, human trafficking, treatment of victims and offenders, trauma among first responders, military personnel, veterans and their families, elder abuse, grief and loss, substance abuse, prevention efforts, threat assessment, trauma-informed care, and more. North County’s own Chase Morrin is back for the third consecutive year to kick off our 2024 season. This time he brings his Ize Trio from the Berklee College of Music. They are breaking boundaries in Jazz, Classical and Folkoric traditions from the middle east. Seeking new sounds of inclusion and Global Jazz; Chase, Naseem and George are creating dynamic, energetic and surprising compositions in order to tell stories from all around the world and bring the world of improvisation and spontaneous musical communication to the stage. Although long time friends and collaborators, the trio officially formed in 2019. They have performed at many local venues in Boston including the Berklee Performance Center, The Lilypad, aVenue and Next Stage in Putney, Vermont. They have also collaborated with the World Strings Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Friesen. In 2020, they worked remotely with animator Annabelle Ponterdolph, to release a full length music animation video called Global Prayer. Additionally, they were awarded a fellowship at Yellow Barn and awarded a Berklee Recording grant for their first album which be released in 2024 featuring special guest John Patitucci. The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep presents the heartbreaking romance, "Failure: A Love Story" as its next student production! By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead — expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual’s successes or failures. Director Benjamin Cole is eager to share the talents of his student cast. “The show offers some unique challenges for creative staging with characters like Front Door, Moses the ball python, December and Mae the feral monk parakeets, and even Cuckoo Clock,” Cole reveals. “We’re exploring storytelling in a way not often seen in youth theatre,” he insists. Assistant Director Steve Smith adds, “This incredibly emotional script is both tragic and beautiful. It is a treat to work on with our students!” The show runs a sweet 90 minutes with no intermission and hopes to be the perfect date night for Valentine’s week. About Mercedes Moore ”From the moment Mercedes Moore takes the stage you can’t look away. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music.
