From the moment Mercedes Moore takes the stage you can’t look away. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, "I didn’t think that I could sing." She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. The list is endless–Taryn Donath, John Simons, Mark Campbell, Marc Ramos, Tracy Wiebeck, Kurt Kalker, Matt Taylor, Steve Wilcox, Scot Smart, Missy Andersen, Sharifah Muhammad, and Laura Chavez–to name but a few. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. The performances, scheduled for January 30 and 31 at 7 p.m., will mark a milestone for Cepromusic, as they kick off their first international tour since the COVID 19 pandemic. Both concerts will be free and open to the public. Under the baton of their visionary artistic director José Luis Castillo, Cepromusic is proud to present "Translínea. Binational Tour 2024" – a groundbreaking series of concerts that not only celebrates the reemergence of international music making but also marks the ensemble's debut at the renowned UC San Diego venue and their first visit to the US West Coast ever. The tour also includes concerts in the neighboring Mexican cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, yet another first for the Mexico City-based ensemble. The concerts will feature a wide array of adventurous and diverse repertoire, aiming to build a musical bridge between contemporary Mexican composition and global new music. Highlights include works by German composer Karola Obermüller (her first-ever performance on campus since she was hired as a professor at UC San Diego), and by Mexican mavericks Ignacio Baca Lobera and Iván Naranjo. More importantly, Cepromusic will perform compositions by several of the talented graduate students of UC San Diego’s Department of Music – Aaron Mencher, Akari Komura, Alex Taylor, Jiyoung Ko, and Nasim Khorassani. These emerging composers contribute to the rich tapestry of new music, offering a glimpse into the future. The concerts will also feature works by globally acclaimed composers Rebecca Saunders and Liao Lin-Ni, embodying a collaborative spirit that transcends borders. The San Diego Animal Sanctuary & Farm, a 20-acre farm in Alpine, is hosting its 11th annual fundraising gala at the Bahia Resort Hotel on Saturday, December 2nd at 5:30 p.m. with “Disco Wonderland” as this year’s theme. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., the event will kick off with a cocktail reception, followed by a three-course gourmet dinner and dancing. Guests will also be able to participate in live and silent auctions. All money raised throughout the evening will support the Foundation’s mission, expanding its resources and farming operations. The evening will also provide a much-needed influx in cash flow and allow the farm to repair shelters and fences while enabling veterinary care as needed.
