The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 19, we will have Vania Pimentel on the piano. Concert pianist Vania Pimentel, born and raised in Brazil, has been promoting Brazilian music in creative recital programs. She has a BA in Music and another BA in Philosophy from Brazil, KA graduate artist diploma from Germany, Masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy, and DMA from the University of Houston. Her doctoral dissertation was on Brazilian toccatas, and her CD “Brazilian Toccatas and Toccatinas” was praised by the Brazilian Academy of Music and newspaper critics in Rio de Janeiro in the year of 2000, five hundreds years of Brazil’s discovery by the Portuguese. Dr. Pimentel became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and worked as an assistant teacher at the Moores School of Music and the Texas Music Festival. In Brazil, she had worked for 14 years as a piano professor in Curitiba, PR. Her first award at a piano competition was at the age of seven in Rio de Janeiro. Her top awards are from J. S. Bach International Piano Competition in Paris (1984), and Jaen Competition in Spain (1982). Dr. Pimentel lived in Italy from 2005 until 2009, and performed at the series Pianomaster in Gravedonamon Lake Como, and chamber music at the Blaue Blumen concerts in Frankfurt. Afterwards, she lived in San Diego until 2022. She performed recitals at Palomar College, Fallbrook Library, Coronado Library, Encinitas Library, the Athenaeum, Carmel Valley Library, and chamber music in Temecula: Classics at the Merc. She performs frequently in Brazil, and has given masterclasses at many universities there. In 2020, she performed and taught at the 37th Music Workshop of Curitiba, in Paraná state. Last year she presented a solo recital during the Music Week of Lapinha, PR, and last April at the Chapel Santa Maria in Curitiba. Currently she lives in Miami. Ages 6-12 years welcome! Calling all young artists and nature lovers! In this 2-part pottery class, kids will design and sculpt their very own whimsical homes–perfect for garden fairies or friendly frogs. In the first 2.5 hour session, children will learn hand-building techniques to shape their magical dwellings from clay, adding creative touches like leaf roofs, mushroom chimneys, lily pad porches, and more. In the second 1-hour session, held two weeks later, they’ll bring their creations to life with vibrant paints and glazes. Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after class. Artists enjoy painting in “the golden hour” because everything becomes progressively more interesting and exciting as shadows lengthen and one is forced to work quickly. Daily demonstrations in acrylic, oil, pastel, and watercolor will be short to allow students time to work. On the first day we will meet at Sunset Point Park on the grass. Subsequent locations will be based on students’ preferences. Please note that there may be locations without immediate access to restroom facilities. Please plan ahead. Since instruction is individual, artists of any level may participate and paint whatever type of scene they prefer. No matter how warm it is when you leave home, bring a jacket anyway. DIRECTIONS to Sunset Point Park: From I-5 take Sea World Drive West to Ingraham Street/West Mission Bay Drive. Take West Mission Drive. Once you are on West Mission Bay Drive, turn right at Dana Landing Road, and then immediately turn left into the Sunset Point Park parking lot. Materials: Students should bring their preferred mediums or buy recommended supplies that follow: Only buy what you plan to use. For those using pastels: Rembrandt, box of 90 or 180, or NuPastel, box of 96; Canson-brand pastel paper #429, 426, or 431 (quartered); foam core drawing board at least 1/2” larger than the size of paper you plan to use; four clips to hold paper; paper towels. For those using oils: French easel or lap easel; stretched canvas or canvas board, up to 16” x 20”; brushes #1, 2, 4, 6, 8 (two of each); odorless Gamsol thinner; small cup or jar; rags; small hand mirror (for seeing errors in reverse); a warm and cool tube of at least seven colors: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Titanium White. Optional: Raw Umber, Scarlet Lake. For those using acrylics: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters. For those using watercolors: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters—but white is optional; flat or pointed brushes; watercolor blocks; chair or easel; Kleenex; 1/2 or 3/4” masking tape to crop image. Genis’ whimsical sculptures of creatures continue to delight art lovers, her strange and endearing works are sought by collectors all over the world. For more than 20 years, Distinction Gallery has been a beacon of the Southern California art scene, specializing in representational painting—ranging from surrealism and realism to figurative works. Guests aged 21 and over can also enjoy drinks available for purchase from Last Spot Bar during the event. Last Spot Bar has a curated selection of wine, beer, sake, cider and non-alcoholic options.
