Art has long been a way for people to carry pieces of home with them — across borders, languages and generations. Join Daylight San Diego for Making Home: How Immigrants Use Art to Find Belonging, a conversation with artists Josue Baltezar, Victor Castañeda H, Fernanda Gaspar and Amara Sengamphan about how creative practices help immigrant communities build identity, connection and a sense of place. This event marks the launch of the Daylight Culture Club, a new series of arts and culture gatherings designed to bring people together to learn, create and connect. Each event will feature conversations with artists, cultural leaders or creatives, along with time for participants to make art together in a welcoming, community-centered space. Following the panel discussion, guests will be invited to stay and craft in community. Some craft supplies will be provided, and attendees are also encouraged to bring their own projects — whether that’s knitting, drawing, collage, embroidery or another creative practice — and work alongside others. Daylight will hold the event at Doh Doh Coffee, a small business run by Karen refugees, where art created by and for their community is featured. The goal is simple: create a space where people can talk about art, make art and build community together. Tickets are available on a sliding scale at $5, $10 or $15. Grand opera is coming to the California Center for the Arts in Escondido in July! Giacomo Puccini’s one-act masterpiece "Il Tabarro", Italian for "The Cloak", is a dramatic story of love, jealousy, and betrayal. Set aboard a river barge in Paris at the turn of the century, the soul-stirring melodies will transport you to a foggy night of deception and death. "Il Tabarro" is the least-performed of the three operas in Puccini’s triple-bill Il Trittico (The Triptych). While companies frequently mount double bills of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, they usually overlook "Il Tabarro", the first opera Puccini composed in the trio. In just one hour, you’ll be spellbound by the beauty and power of this music, whether you’re a devoted opera fan or a first-timer. That’s just half of the program, though. After the intermission, you’ll see the same story told in a completely different way: through neoclassical ballet. Featuring original choreography, this brand new adaptation of "Il Tabarro" reverses the narrative as the characters are now silent, speaking only through mesmerizingly expressive movements. This time, you’ll hear the same amazing orchestrations but without any vocal parts. Cinballera’s founders, dramatic coloratura soprano Tiffany Brannan and prima ballerina Rebekah Brannan, will be trading off as the leading lady in the opera and ballet, leading a talented cast of international performers and local professionals. "Il Tabarro" is presented in collaboration with the Temecula Valley Symphony, with Maestro John Mario Di Costanzo conducting. This production is Cinballera’s Season 4 opener, marking the 3-year anniversary of the company’s first performance in July 2023! Know a Veteran? Nominate a Veteran for the 2026 LGBT Veterans Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony will be held in November at The San Diego LGBT Community Center. The Benjamin F. Dillingham, III and Bridget Wilson LGBT Veterans Wall of Honor recognizes LGBTQ+ veterans with ties to San Diego who served under anti-LGBTQ policies, preventing their ability to serve, and serve safety and openly, as well as those who have served after the ending of those policies. These veterans have taken the oath to serve our country and have done so honorably, and with distinction, acting as role models in advancing equality. The LGBT Veterans Wall commemorates these veterans’ lives in hopes that their courage, bravery and sacrifices will continue to inspire future generations. We invite you to nominate an LGBTQ+ veteran you know whose story deserves to be uplifted. Nominees are eligible regardless of rank earned, branch of service or component  (Active, Reserve, or National Guard). Nominees may be living or deceased. We'll provide a workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you disassemble and troubleshoot your item. Even if we can't fix it, you'll learn more about how it was made and how it works.
