  • This event pairs a screening of the 2025 movie "Fantastic Four: First Steps" and a discussion with the science advisor who worked on the movie. Believe it or not, there’s some real science in superhero movies. When telling a story about super-powered humans on an alternate Earth, the team behind Fantastic Four: First Steps consulted physics professor Clifford Johnson. He’ll share insights about how his expertise helped shape the design and plot of the movie. How might teleportation and faster than light travel work? Can you surf a neutron star? Real-world physics is on-screen in every equation Reed Richards scribbles on a chalkboard and we’ll explore the mix of science and imagination, and discuss why it’s an important balance. • In this two-hour workshop, we will explore how to go From Journal Writing to Memoir Craft. There is a difference between the personal practice of journaling and writing stories to publish for others to read. Discover ways that journaling can help you write your memoir, deepen your story, and support you as a writer. Learn gentle memoir craft tools that help transform experience into compelling, resonant narrative. In this workshop, Lynda will share her own experience of crossing the bridge from journaling to memoir writing and how she has also blended the two crafts in support of one another. Your journal holds powerful stories waiting to be shaped into memoir with clarity, care, and intention. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram
  • Steven Schick met and grew to know the venerable composer Chou Wen-chung at UC San Diego on the several occasions Chou was invited to San Diego by Schick’s colleague Roger Reynolds. Professor Chou was a champion of the music of Edgard Varèse and was himself one of the most important composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The links between Professor Chou and the department strengthened over the years--Lei Liang on UC San Diego has been a steadfast friend and advocate of Professor Chou's music. After his death in 2019, Liang and Schick brought all of Professor Chou’s percussion instruments, including many that belonged to Varèse, to UC San Diego where they now comprise the core of a collection of historically important percussion instruments. Each year, a UC San Diego graduate student is commissioned for a new piece that uses or is inspired by the collection. This year, the newly commissioned pieces are by graduate students Jiyoung Ko and Myles Ortiz-Green. Also on the program are works by Schick’s UC San Diego colleague, Wilfrido Terrazas, and an old friend, Gabriela Ortiz. Visit: https://music-web.ucsd.edu/concerts/cms_index.php?i=804
