Do you enjoy listening to a good story? Being read to is enjoyable for everyone! Every 3rd Tuesday of the month we will read two short stories out loud to you. These stories may have you on the edge of your seat in suspense, drifting off to the sound of the words, or full in your feelings. So sit back and relax while we read to you, with a brief intermission, and then finish off with an engaging discussion. This month we are reading a short story from Paul Theroux's book of short stories The Vanishing Point. These short stories will be relatable for everyone as we all experience those moments in life where change is inevitable. Come join us Tuesday night to find out what the 2nd story will be! UC San Diego’s earthquake shake table will test a ten story building built from a lightweight recycled steel to possibly expand its use for tall structures in earthquake zones.

Veni Sun is Jared Henry’s bedroom music project based out of San Diego, California. Drawing inspiration from his adventures, passions and love for people and the outdoors, Jared incorporates dreamy synth sounds with catchy guitar riffs and layered ambient sounds. His music takes people to a happy place and to realms of nostalgia. Releasing his first EP in 2020, Jared had no plans to pursue music or to even play shows for that matter. He was simply creating music because it was what he liked to do in his free time. About a year later, Jared became friends with Goth Babe (Griff Washburn) and showed him his music project Veni Sun. Griff liked his tunes and invited him to open up for him on his West Coast Tour of 2021. Since that tour, Veni Sun’s wings have caught wind and released multiple singles and EP’s, attracting the likes of the Spotify Editorial team and many more ears around the world. With Veni Sun’s local fan base growing more and more everyday, they are now hitting the road to make new friends and fans across North America, playing show’s wherever they can. San Diego Poetry Annual and San Diego Public Library present the 9th annual Steve Kowit Poetry Prize, given to deserving poets anywhere in honor of celebrated local poet Steve Kowit, a former teacher at San Diego State University and Southwestern College. Winners and Honorable Mentions are invited to read at the annual awards reception. The program honors late local poet Steve Kowit’s contributions to American poetry. The program will feature readings by the top three 2024 Steve Kowit Poetry Prize honorees and special appearances by all three existing San Diego Poet Laureates Paola Capó-García, Jason Magabo Prez, Ron Salisbury, and California Beat Poet Laureate Chris Vannoy. We will explore the fundamentals of watercolor—adding pen-and-ink as well. The class is designed to break down fear and encourage spontaneity. All levels are welcome in this positive and encouraging class. Materials: Paper: two 22” x 30” sheets of 100%, 140 lb., rag, cold-pressed paper (such as Arches or Fabriano). Brushes: one #8, #10, or #12 round brush (with a good point); one 3/4” or 1” flat brush; one large (2” or 2 1/2”) cheap bristle brush (from hardware store). Other: palette (any palette with eight or more color wells will do); water container; sketchbook; two No. 2 pencils; 3/4” or 1”–wide masking tape; small drawing board (Gatorfoam board or Masonite, 12” x 16” minimum); paper towels (Viva preferred). Paint: Any colors you have. Must-have colors (at least 14 ml) are Daniel Smith New Gamboge; Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna (do not substitute another brand for this one); Alizarin Crimson Permanent; French Ultramarine Blue; Phthalo Blue; Burnt Umber.
