Inspired by Japanese traditional shoji lamps, Instructor Michael Olin shares his take with students continuing their exploration of the woodshop and woodworking techniques. A shoji lamp is a light fixture with kumiko and rice paper inset into the frame to diffuse the light. Students will learn how to make their interpretation of a shoji lamp using pre-milled lumber using half-lap joints. We will practice layout and advanced techniques on the table saw to complete this project. We apply many of the same techniques in this class that we use in making full-size shoji doors. REQUIRED: Students must have taken our Intro to the Woodshop course in order to enroll in this class. If you have other woodworking experience, please leave details in the notes upon purchase and we will be in touch with you if we have questions. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron.
