Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, 2 p.m. Rafael Payare, conductor Daniil Trifonov, piano TCHAIKOVSKY: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23 SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93 Rafael Payare returns to Jacobs Music Center to lead two profound masterworks composed a century apart: Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed by Daniil Trifonov, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. Both works unite the intensely personal with the powerfully public. Shostakovich completed his Symphony No. 10 in the aftermath of Stalin’s death in 1953. The music bears witness to immense suffering under tyranny while reclaiming the voice of the individual. Through coded motifs of his own name, allusions to those he cared for, and echoes of Russian poetry, Mahler, and Jewish folk tradition, Shostakovich shaped a drama of fear, endurance, and defiance. The Mexican Independence Day Celebration at the Old Globe is Saturday, Sept.12, 2026 from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Visitors are welcomed onto our campus to attend our fun and festive AXIS events which are designed for the whole family. AXIS is a free, outdoor, multi-generational program that celebrates the cultural diversity of San Diego by inviting local artists and craftspeople to share their cultural traditions and heritage on the Globe’s Copley Plaza. Learn to throw ceramics on a wheel! Sundays, Sept 13, 20, 27, Oct 4, 18, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., with last class 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This beginner-friendly 5-week pottery course focused on learning the foundations of wheel throwing while creating functional and personal ceramic pieces. Throughout the 5-week course, students will explore wheel throwing fundamentals including centering, pulling walls, trimming, foot rings, handle attachment, surface decoration, underglazes, and glazing techniques. During the first week, students will be introduced to the pottery wheel and learn the basics of centering and shaping simple forms while getting comfortable working with clay. In the second week, students will continue building confidence on the wheel while creating more intentional functional forms such as mugs, bowls, and small plates. The third week focuses on trimming and refinement techniques, including foot rings, surface cleanup, and handle attachment to help elevate and finish each piece. During the fourth week, students will explore surface design and decoration using underglazes, texture, carving, and decorative details to give their work its own personality and style. After bisque firing (no class week), the final class will focus on glazing and finishing techniques. Students will learn how different glazes interact and complete their finished ceramic pieces.
