Our July VolunBEERS is dedicated to supporting youth literacy within San Diego with Words Alive!, an organization whose mission is to open opportunities for life success by inspiring a commitment to reading. Attendees will join us in packing learning kits that include a craft activity, resource guides, and a copy of a book for students. Volunteers will additionally join us in a letter writing campaign that is dedicated to students, educators, and volunteers in their programs. Space and supplies are limited, so we recommend buying your tickets early. General admission is $25 for the Thumbs Up ticket which includes project supplies + one non-alcoholic beverage. Drink deals are $30 for the High Five ticket which includes project supplies + one pour from Ballast Point Brewing, or $50 for the Handshake ticket which includes project supplies + up to three pours from Ballast Point Brewing. Get ready to pedal with a purpose! On Friday, June 20, Belmont Village La Jolla (3880 Nobel Dr.) will host its third annual bike-a-thon as part of The Longest Day, a nationwide event supporting the Alzheimer’s Association. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., residents, staff, and community members will ride a recumbent bike in 15-minute shifts to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s and we’d love for you to be part of the action. Each ride symbolizes the daily challenges faced by those affected by the disease. With a $25 donation, anyone can ride alongside others, with proceeds benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego Chapter to help fund critical research and care.

This National Poetry Month, let's celebrate the legacy and impact of Latine poets in the U.S. and around the world. Newly appointed San Diego Poet Laureate Paola Capó-García will share poems in English and Spanish from her favorite Latine poets of the 20th and 21st centuries in an effort to remind us of their cultural, political, and aesthetic influence. Bring your own favorite poem by a Latine author to share with the group or just come to listen and discuss. A resident of North Park who is originally from Puerto Rico, Ms. Capó-García is the City’s third poet laureate. She is the author of "Clap for Me That’s Not Me", which won Rescue Press' 2017 Black Box Poetry Prize.
