  • From San Diego weekend arts preview (KPBS feature): Artist Katherine Brannock described her "Someday Mouse" project on Instagram as "uplifting cuteness," and it's hard to top that. As a solo exhibition at Thumbprint Gallery in La Jolla, Brannock will showcase dozens of drawings of her "Someday Mouse" character, all stills from a short film featuring the mouse character made famous in her "The Adventures of Someday Mouse" books. Brannock draws the mouse with a mesmerizingly fine dot-shading method, and the mouse finds itself in adventures both wild and mundane, exuding hope, quietness and optimism, which is something incredibly soothing and pleasant. You can try to understand the who/what/when/where/why of the mouse here. Save the date: Brannock will also show an exhibition of an entirely different series later this month at Trash Lamb Gallery, opening July 23. Details: Opens 5-10 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2022 and is on view through Aug. 6. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Thumbprint Gallery, 920 Kline St., La Jolla. • Join us for the opening reception for Turning Tides, Saturday, August 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ! The exhibition will present works by all 12 TWA group members, showcasing their individual visions of what “Turning Tides” means to them. As we head into a changed world, post-pandemic and with social and political shifts, these are expressions of hope during transition, of ways to move forward, of the force of the spirit and the resilience of nature. The works are in a range of media: from textiles to painting, ceramic and bronze sculpture to mixed media, and in many styles, from abstract to whimsical to realism. The group has been working and showing together for 6 years, and were recently featured at the Oceanside Museum of Art in an exhibition titled “Now.” Member artists also show individually, in galleries and museums on both coasts, and their work is held in corporate and private collections worldwide. This is an opportunity to engage with these amazing 12 Women Artists, and their works. We are so excited for this event. Light bites and refreshments will be served! • From the Athenaeum: The 23rd Athenaeum Summer Festival is a series of four of concerts that will feature pianist Gustavo Romero. For 22 years, the Athenaeum has presented unforgettable festivals featuring virtuoso pianist and San Diego native Gustavo Romero performing the complete piano repertoire of a specific composer. Whether you have been with us all 22 years or have yet to experience the wonder of this artist—who plays from memory—you will not want to miss our upcoming 23rd Summer Festival. Romero, a native San Diegan, first performed at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library as a young boy, and it was with him that the Athenaeum planned its first Summer Festival in 1999, the organization's 100th anniversary. Each year, Romero chooses composers to study in depth, sharing the full range of their artistry. Dinners are offered after each concert at the Athenaeum. The dinners, offered immediately following each concert in private homes or at the Athenaeum, are an opportunity for concertgoers to socialize, meet Mr. Romero, and share a delicious meal.
