The best writing comes from writing what you know, and based on Joel Rafael’s life experiences and over fifty years of making music, he has a deep well from which to draw. He has chronicled his life and the world around him with passionate songwriting rooted in the folk tradition. Joel began performing in showcases and small clubs around Southern California in the early 1970s. In 1981, he toured with Jesse Colin Young, and released his debut album, "Dharma Bums." Joel won Kerrville’s new folk award in 1995 and gained national airplay with the seminal Joel Rafael Band. He composed and performed all original music for the LA Theatre Works production of "The Grapes of Wrath" in 2002 and toured the southwest with Joan Baez in 2003. No influence is more obvious in his work than that of Woody Guthrie, with whom he shares five co-writes, and Joel has been a featured performer at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival for all twenty-seven years. Rupert Wates is a London-born, award-winning songwriter who signed an exclusive publishing deal with Eaton Music in the late 1990s and has been writing full-time ever since. Since relocating to the United States in 2006, he has released eleven acclaimed full-length albums, earning airplay across the United States, Canada, Europe, Israel, and Australia. His work has inspired over fifty songwriting awards and more than twenty cover recordings by other artists, including two full tribute albums recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. Performing an average of 120 shows a year across North America and Europe, Rupert continues to captivate audiences with his haunting, melodic brand of acoustic art-folk. He will share a special presentation on his Athenaeum show, The Splinter in the Eye, and how it connects to his career and process. The reception will take at 6 p.m., followed by a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Carlos Castro Arias will be exhibiting his newest project, The Splinter in the Eye, an installation composed of paintings and objects in which the artist reflects about memory, trauma, and elements of the individual and collective identity. Carlos Castro Arias is a Colombian artist, professor, and musician. He received a BA from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogota in 2002 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2008 to the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received an MFA in painting in 2010. Castro Arias has been an associate professor at San Diego State University since 2019. In 2022, the Museo Universitario Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia exhibited a retrospective of his work entitled La Vida de las Cosas Muertas (The Life of Dead Things). Most recently Castro Arias has exhibited at Artpace, San Antonio; Bread & Salt, San Diego; LA Galería, Bogota; Quint Gallery, La Jolla, and Espacio El Dorado, Bogota. He has participated in group shows in Sweden, Peru, France, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Venezuela. His musical projects include: POPO (2000), Los Claudios de Colombia (2005-2010) and Amor Negro (2020). The artist lives and works between San Diego, Tijuana, and Bogota. San Diego County food relief organization Feeding San Diego is collecting funds and donations for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Our colleagues at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, a Feeding America partner food bank, are facing urgent need due to the wildfires burning throughout Los Angeles County. Please donate to help Feeding San Diego purchase the items they are in critical need of, including bottled water/hydrating beverages, snacks, and ready-to-eat meals. Most-needed items include: -Bottled water/hydrating beverages (coconut water, electrolyte drinks) -Packaged and shelf stable snacks (like peanut butter crackers, energy/protein bars, fruit snacks, and jerky) -Ready-to-eat meals (this includes pop top canned meat and individual cereal boxes) We will be making multiple trips up to Los Angeles to deliver these essential supplies.
