Dive into the world of theater with our latest exhibition, "Alex Katz: Theater and Dance," and draw costume designs inspired by friends and loved ones and set designs inspired by a memorable place or somewhere that you have always wanted to visit. Reflections is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. In this new 4-week art series, consider what story you want to tell through your theater-inspired artwork and take inspiration from your own life to create. Imagine yourself, your friends, and your family, each depicted in the costume designs they would wear in a play about your lives, and design a set or backdrop where a scene from your life might play out. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, these workshops offer a fun and supportive space to explore new creative possibilities! Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Registration gives participants access to the full series (four workshops). Session Dates Session dates in this series are: Friday, September 12 and Friday, September 19 Friday, October 3 and Friday, October 10 Daily Program 10 a.m.: Gallery Discussion The conversations around the artworks in MCASD’s collection will offer stimulating input and prompts for participants as they think about creating their own artworks. 10:30 a.m.: Coffee and Mingle Refreshments and time for social interaction will take place in Museum venues that take full advantage of the beautiful oceanside location and views. 11 a.m.: Art-Making Activity The hands-on workshop will provide a forum for self-expression and developing new interpersonal connections. Weekly Program September 12 & 19: Costume Design Drawing Drawing inspiration from Katz’s costume designs, create representations of yourself and your friends or family. Consider what type of clothes each member in your group might wear–what scene will you be depicting and what type of clothes make sense in it? Will it be everyday clothes or something for a special trip or occasion? You will create your own costume designs through a combination of drawing and tracing. October 3 & 10: Set Design Drawing Create a set design drawing for the theater production of your life inspired by Katz’s set designs. Imagine important or exciting moments in your life and how these might look in a play or reimagine the event happening in a location that you long to visit. Consider whether your set design drawing will be for an interior or exterior location. What would be included in this space? Perhaps a couch or a tree. You will design these, drawing and imagining your world as a stage where costumes and sets work together to bring your theater-inspired artworks to life. Madison Gallery in Solana Beach will present "Four Seasons Interrupted" by internationally acclaimed Bosnian artist Radenko Milak, on view October 15 through December 15, 2025. Known for representing Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 57th Venice Biennale, Milak debuts a striking new series of 12–14 large-scale watercolors exploring climate disruption and the disappearance of seasonal rhythms. Set against the backdrop of New York City, these meticulously rendered works blur the line between painting and photography, creating a dreamlike tension between time, memory, and nature. "All these works move between fiction and reality. They resemble something familiar, scenes we seem to recognize, yet they do not truly exist. The entire series is conceived as a gap between what is real and what is imagined... a rupture where a new perception emerges," says Milak. The Ocean Conservancy and the California Coastal Commission partner with volunteer organizations, such as I Love A Clean San Diego to create the largest, international cleanup day. I Love A Clean San Diego leads the efforts for this day in San Diego County for the 41st year in a row. Data collected from this event feeds into the world’s largest database on marine debris. Join our efforts this year to be a part of this global event! This year, our countywide Coastal Cleanup Day will have around 100 + locations for volunteers to choose from, inland and coastal. Each site is hosted by a site captain (a specially trained volunteer) who will manage volunteers on site, properly dispose of the trash, and report back totals. The series continues on June 11 with former San Diego residents vocalist Gillian Margot and Geoffrey Keezer (piano), featuring music from their eponymous new duo album. For this Athenaeum date, they are joined by Ben Williams on bass and San Diego jazz hero Peter Sprague on guitar. With an exquisite voice, a disarmingly wide vocal range, and a style that is deeply rooted in the tradition of the great jazz vocalists, Margot possesses a gift of storytelling and stunning lyrical delivery. A native of Toronto, Canada, Margot studied under a generation of jazz legends including Oscar Peterson, Freddy Cole, Carol Welsman, and Norman Simmons. Keezer is a GRAMMY-winning pianist, composer, arranger, and producer based in New York City, where he first moved in 1989 to become the final pianist with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Keezer has toured and recorded with a galaxy of stars including Ray Brown, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Sting, and Christian McBride. Partners in music since 2014 and in life since 2016, both Margot and Keezer share a predisposition to address, in Margot’s words, “different styles, genres, or grooves and feels, and harmonic implications,” an attitude that accounts for the capacious range of repertoire in their performances. A spirit of freedom judiciously balanced with collective consciousness pervades their recent recording, as Keezer and Margot mind meld on a half-dozen “Standard” standards along with authoritatively interpreted songs by Hermeto Pascoal, Peter Gabriel, Chick Corea, and Donald and Dorothy Brown.
