Directed by SDSU professor and filmmaker Jessica McGaugh, "Sense of Direction" tells the story of Reggie, a disengaged therapist left reeling from the death of her brother, who finds her status quo upended by a new patient Winston who suffers from a debilitating fear of life. Their lives quickly become entangled when an inexplicable intimacy blooms between them. After their connection becomes impossible to navigate, they decide to see a therapist for their therapist-client relationship. These two strange people whose dynamic might be even stranger may be just what the other needs to wake up to life. The reed flute (ney)—hollow yet filled with song—has long symbolized the human soul’s longing to return to its divine source. Its voice reminds us that emptiness can become a doorway to transformation. Through music, movement, and the written word, audiences are invited to journey inward—beyond listening, into feeling. This is not simply a performance, but a shared moment of reflection: an invitation to pause, reconnect, and remember the stillness and wisdom within.
