  • Steve Budd wonders why other people can tie the knot and he can’t. Oy, does he wonder! So he asked a bunch of couples what brought them together and keeps them from pulling apart. Meet a Jewish couple who met on Craigslist, an interfaith pair who met at a Halloween party, and more. Budd plays close to a dozen characters, using their own words taken from hours of interviews, and weaves in his relentless search for “the one.” Check out the newest mashup of personal storytelling and documentary theater from an award-winning solo performer who "sparkles with manic and irrepressible charm" (Theatrius). Heartfelt and hilarious. 60-minute solo show from one of the Bay Area’s premier solo performers. Visit: 'Oy, What They Said About Love' Yiddish Arts and Academics on Instagram and Facebook
  • “Hybrid” writing is becoming part of main stream literature. This lively class will explore unusual, interesting forms of writing–ideal for writers of both poetry and prose. Each week will focus on one experimental form. Craft lessons will introduce each form, and we will read aloud and discuss several examples. Prompts will allow students to practice and experiment with that week’s form, and sharing will be encouraged but not required. Additionally, each class will include opportunities and considerations for publication submission. Classes may be purchased individually or as a group. Ideal for anyone looking for a safe, supportive environment to try on new forms and expand one’s writing! • Five girls, their fathers and the mess of growing up. In the summer of 2008, five young girls of color and their white fathers show up at a community center. With emotions ranging from excited to downright suspicious, some are more ready than others to embark on this adventurous – albeit misguided – father-daughter bonding program. Over their time together, the fathers and daughters navigate the joy and confusion of childhood amidst myriad challenges: burgeoning friendships, unfulfilled crushes, intergenerational struggles, grief, financial insecurity and the frustration of not being seen for who you truly are. Eliana Theologides Rodriguez is an exhilarating new voice whose work centers on young women and the complexities of race, heritage and family. "Indian Princesses" is based on a real-life father-daughter YMCA program she participated in as a child – which still exists today under different names. Laugh-out-loud funny and delicately tender, this delightful new play illuminates the quirky, messy, and magical moments of growing up. As this patchwork group struggles to push through difficult conversations, they eventually discover the power, connection, and love that is gained when they do. First Look (previews)*: June 10 – 14 Weeks 2 – 4: June 17 – July 6 Please note: There are no performances on Sunday, June 15 or Friday, July 4. There will also be a 2 p.m. performance on Thursday, July 3. La Jolla Playhouse on Facebook / Instagram

  • Putative poetry always includes the cry of dissent from voices of diversity, insisting on justice from pens that ring bells of passion and truth. This class for beginning and seasoned poets will weave words in the framework of American values: inclusion, tolerance, empathy, and respect, like the confluence of many rivers that, once joined, flow to the sea, e.g. the title of a recent poem of Jim Moreno’s was “The Ocean Refuses No Rivers”. First time poets to this class can benefit from poetry film clips where Palestinian and Pakistani poets read inspiring poems reflecting the above values. In addition, Jim loves reading poems to his classes that have inspired him from poets who write with passion, image & imagination. You will leave this class after writing two original poems, guided by poetry prompts, adequate writing time and reading time. Add a bibliography of literature resources included to give you hours of interesting reading and listening after the class is done.
