Join us in-person at Oceanside Museum of Art for a free community screening of the film "A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks" (99 minutes). Presented in partnership with Oceanside Public Library and the North County African American Women’s Association, the film explores the power of images in advancing racial, economic, and social equality as seen through the lens of Gordon Parks, one of America's most trailblazing artists, and the generation of young photographers, filmmakers, and activists he inspired. From the 1940s through the 2000s, Parks' bold and revealing body of work captured the intersections of art, race, class and politics across the United States, documenting civil rights and social justice as part of the everyday experience. Free copies of the book "A Choice of Weapons" by Gordon Parks will be given away by Oceanside Public Library while supplies last. During the 17th century the Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe. Art, military strength, science, and trade were at its peak. Simultaneously, a break from monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions allowed for the decline of interest in religious paintings. Furthermore, a burgeoning middle class sought out new genres of painting that helped enhance their homes and reflect their tastes and interests. Landscapes, cityscapes, portraiture, and still life grew ever more popular in this era. Many of the most beloved artists of the 1600s also came from this region. This docent-led talk on the Dutch Baroque will highlight artists such as Pieter Claesz, Frans Hals, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Johannes Vermeer. Our latest installment of the music of J.S. Bach paired with arrangements of great Rock & Roll, including the premiere of Steve Huber's new arrangement of the Who's "Quadrophenia". The Hutchins Consort plays on the eight scaled violins of the violin octet designed and built by famed luthier Dr. Carleen Hutchins. The instruments are the first successful attempt to create an acoustically balanced set of instruments that can sound truly like violins across the entire range of written music. With instruments ranging from the tiny treble violin, tuned one octave above the standard violin, to the gigantic large bass violin, tuned one octave lower than a 'cello, the Hutchins Consort produces an astonishing palette of sounds.

Clearity, a San Diego-based national ovarian cancer nonprofit organization, announces its kick-off to their annual Teal Revolution Celebratory Walk and Fundraiser. In conjunction with Liberty Station’s monthly “First Friday” event, Clearity will host a launch event featuring an Art Area, hosted by Bilingual Kids and the work of special guest artist and 14-year ovarian cancer survivor Annette Bennington McElhiney of La Jolla.
