Occupy Thirdspace II: Plástica y palabra en TJ/SD explores the relationship between the visual arts and palabra (word). It documents the history of this relationship from the late 1980s to the present, through the work of artists who have lived and worked in Tijuana and San Diego. Palabra as a concept speaks back to the oppressive function of "Language," as a tool for colonization, assimilation, and exclusion —repurposing, translating, and changing it. Plástica y Palabra represents a collective force of impulses that cross geopolitical, racial, lingual, social, and economic borders. These practices live, give new life, and assign new meaning to their environment. Sonidero Travesura will be performing live at the gallery opening on the Dome terrace. The duo is composed of Tijuana native Omar Lizarraga and Dardin Coria. New Village Arts (NVA), North County’s cultural hub, launches its 20th Anniversary Season with a world premiere: "1222 Oceanfront: A Black Family Christmas," a new holiday musical written by San Diego playwright Dea Hurston and devised by Frankie Alicea-Ford, Kevin “Blax” Burroughs, Milena (Sellers) Phillips, and Dea Hurston, centering on the family holiday experience in a humorous and touching way. But seriously, how much drama can there be on Christmas Eve? "1222 Oceanfront: A Black Family Christmas" features a joyous mix of original holiday songs with traditional carols re-imagined. The exciting young members of the Arod Quartet, based in Paris, first came to international attention when they won first prize at the 2015 Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition and the 2016 ARD International Music Competition. They arrive to San Diego this Spring! The program includes Mozart’s famous “Dissonance” String Quartet no. 19 in C Major; Bartok’s String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor, acknowledged as his first masterpiece; and Ravel’s only string quartet, a staple of the chamber music repertoire. A Beautiful Way to Honor Your Loved Ones The Elizabeth Hospice Hosts Butterfly Release Ceremony on May 1 Everyone in the community is invited to attend Wings of Hope, hosted by The Elizabeth Hospice, on Sunday, May 1, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m.. This event will take place at the California Center for the Arts, located at 340 N. Escondido Blvd in Escondido. Attendees will have the opportunity to honor and celebrate in a beautiful way the special people who have touched their lives. Admission is free. Now in residence street-side at Art Produce is SDSU MFA candidate Sepideh Shamloufard. Shamloufard's work was included in the video collection "Intervals of Process" that was recently on view in the gallery windows, and her works featured Persian script and poetry written with a calligraphy pen and ink pot, from the point of view of the writer. Shamloufard's hair — or its shadows — also shows in the frame. For this three-week installation, Shamloufard will use interactive video to explore her childhood in Tehran, ideas of migration, time, memory and moments, as well as hair — how fundamental hair is to our human condition.
