  • Studio ACE is proud to present the first annual Valley Arts Festival (VAF), supported by a grant from The Conrad Prebys Foundation, with promotional sponsorship by Visit Oceanside. Like so many others, the festival was put on hold in 2020, allowing time for reflection and reinvention. We are pleased to announce the festival is making its official reemergence in 2021 as Valley Arts Festival, which will remain an annual celebration of arts and culture, now featuring different themes each year. To mark its official debut, Valley Arts Festival is pleased to present a celebration of Oceanside and its first peoples: the Payómkawichum (People of the West). The festival aims to help support and celebrate the indigenous population that lived on the land, now known as Oceanside. Valley Arts Festival will help educate the community on the beauty and strength of this amazing culture. A portion of proceeds from the festival will be donated to the San Luis Rey Mission Indian Foundation for enrichment programs. This free family-friendly festival will feature: • Native American flute music with Spiritual Storm • Native American blues music with Tracy Lee Nelson • Indian Fry Bread for purchase • Educational tables filled with historic cultural items and more! • Come enjoy an exciting and memorable Christmas show guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit, “Together Again For Christmas,” with nearly 90 singers featuring the nine-time International Chorus Champions Masters of Harmony based in Los Angeles, joined by their guest, award-winning Pacific Coast Harmony chorus of La Jolla, on Saturday, December 10 at 3 p.m. The acoustics in the beautiful Sanctuary are extraordinary and vibrant thus expanding the close harmony and magic the two choruses create. It’s a thrill for performers and audience as well! The venue is suited for musical performances from string quartets and small orchestras to vocal extravaganzas such as this. The surroundings are extraordinary with beautiful tile mosaics under an exceptionally beautiful dome covered with a mosaic image of Jesus. The Masters of Harmony chorus is one of the premier men’s a cappella groups in America. As a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, they regularly compete with more than 800 choruses from the United States, Canada, and several foreign countries. Besides cyclical competition at divisional, district and international contests, the chorus performs at barbershop shows, commercial bookings, community concerts, and other special events such as the International A Cappella Festival in Saint Petersburg, Russia and the 75th Anniversary Commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor in Honolulu. The Masters of Harmony welcomes men from all walks of life who enjoy singing at a high level. If you’re one of those men, they would love to have you join them Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at La Mirada Methodist Church, 15700 Rosecrans Ave., La Mirada. They have recorded eight albums. All are available at www.mastersofharmony.org or after this performance. • A Spark In the Dark is a powerful picture book about the ocean of feelings inside all of us. Whether you are mad, sad, scared, or lost in the dark, there’s always hope -- a spark of light to lead you back home. A Spark in the Dark is a book to read aloud, a book to share, and a book to return to whenever you need it. There is light, and there is dark. But sometimes the dark creeps up and surrounds you. Still, even in those deep, dark moments, you can always find a spark of light, if you look. Because while you need light to find your way through the dark, you also need dark to see the light. Author-artist Pam Fong’s gentle text and luminous artwork guide readers through the dangers and marvels of the deep sea with an expressive little fish who must find its way home. A lush and moving picture book that gives young readers -- and their parents -- a way to think about and talk about the wide ocean of emotions that everyone feels.

  • From San Diego weekend arts events (KPBS feature): Preston Swirnoff's latest multidisciplinary work is called "Stained Glass Enters the Stream," and it's a circular composition, with no clear beginning or end. The apparatus Swirnoff uses to perform the piece involves an intricate analog tape looping between two machines, emitting a dynamic, tuned chord, and it's connected to an organ. Swirnoff has collaborated with artists Spenser Little, known for his intricate and text-based wire sculptures, and Richard Isabella. It's immersive and meditative, and the installation will remain on view through Jan. 16. RSVP with Swish for access to the free performance, to reduce the number of guests indoors. The performance will also be livestreamed on Instagram. Details: Friday, Jan. 7, 2022 at 7 p.m., or by appointment through Jan. 16. Swish Projects, 2903 El Cajon Blvd., North Park. Free.
