The annual street fair returns to San Diego Avenue and will benefit students visiting Old Town. The annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration in Old Town will kick off with a street fair on October 29 and 30, 2022 and will culminate with the traditional candlelight procession starting at Sundown, November 2. The free street fair, produced by The Old Town San Diego Foundation and hosted by the Old Town Chamber of Commerce is sponsored by AT&T and McDonalds. More than 50 booths will be on hand with everything from face painters to food items, crafts, local artisans, and community groups. There will be a kids’ craft area, a stage with live entertainment and a beer garden as well. The event will run the length of San Diego Avenue from Twigg St south to El Campo Santo Cemetery. A portion of the proceeds from the two-day event will support the Old Town San Diego Foundation which provides grants to underserved schools for field trips to Old Town San Diego for elementary students. The street fair celebration will be from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Originating in Mexico, Día de los Muertos is a celebration to remember and honor those who have departed. Traditionally, the streets near cemeteries are filled with decorations, flowers, candy calaveras and parades. Mexican families create special altars displaying offerings of food, candles, incense, ochre yellow marigolds, and photos of departed loved ones. Representing the more traditional celebration of Dia de los Muertos, the annual procession will take place on Nov. 2, 2022, beginning in front of the Immaculate Conception Church, located at San Diego Avenue and Twiggs Street. The procession will commence at 6 p.m. and will travel down San Diego Avenue to El Campo Santo Cemetery. Throughout the weekend up until November 2, restaurants, businesses, museums, and shops will be creating traditional and contemporary Día de los Muertos altars (ofrendas). Unique ofrendas will honor historic Old Town figures, as well as more current stories. A public ofrenda will be in El Campo cemetery where visitors are encouraged to add their own mementos, photos, and written tributes to loved ones. It is highly suggested that visitors take public transportation using the San Diego Trolley or the MTS bus system as parking will be limited. They walk on wind, they breathe, they hunker down in the wind, robots without batteries, chips, just a system of levers highly attuned to the environment they inhabit. This course explores the mechanics and philosophy behind Theo Jensen’s “Strandbeests” and other artistic creations that interact with the elements. Far from just a show and tell this course offers materials, knowledge, and space to support design and construction of these creations. This is an in-person workshop. Every Ocean Hughes (EOH), f.k.a. Emily Roysdon (born 1977), is an transdisciplinary artist and writer. EOH’s recent projects take the form of performance, photographic installations, print making, text, video, and curating. EOH was editor and co-founder of the queer feminist journal and artist collective, LTTR. Her many collaborations include music with The Knife, Colin Self, and JD Samson & MEN; costume design for choreographers Levi Gonzalez, Vanessa Anspaugh, Faye Driscoll, and the band Le Tigre. Solo exhibitions include Studio Voltaire, London (2022); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2022); Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon (2017); Secession, Vienna (2015); PARTICIPANT INC, New York (2015); Art in General, New York (2011); and the Berkeley Art Museum (2010). EOH has received commissions for new work from Tate Modern, London (2012, 2017), the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2013–14); Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (2013–14); and the Kitchen, New York (2010). EOH’s work was featured in the 11th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2016); the Biennale of Sydney (2014); Future Generation Art Prize at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013); the Whitney Biennial 2010, New York; Manifesta 8, Murcia, Spain (2010); Greater NY, MoMA/PS1 (2010); and The Generational, New Museum (2009). When a 25-year-old Anthony van Dyck visited Palermo during his transformative sojourn in Italy, he got more than he had bargained for. In May 1624, mere weeks after his arrival to paint the Spanish viceroy, Emanuele Filiberto, the city's most disastrous plague struck. Terrifying as it was for the artist, van Dyck's involuntary quarantine was a boon for the history of art. He used that time to create a series of paintings which transformed Saint Rosalie into Palermo’s main patron saint. In this docent-led talk, we will examine those paintings and some of his portraits to see what they can tell us about the power of painted imagery to comfort, and to reflect the times. Back by popular demand, we will be offering a gold leaf workshop by artist Duke Windsor. On Wednesday, November 9, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., we will explore the process of gilding in gold leaf. No experience is necessary. Guests will be able to learn the history, tools, materials and techniques of applying gold leaf to artwork by using both traditional and experimental techniques. Duke Windsor will supply a project for guests to work on and take home, or you may bring an existing project that you wish to work on. Gold leaf supplies will be provided. From the organizer: Patio Playhouse Community Theater proudly presents "Murder Ballad," with book and lyrics by Julia Jordan and music and lyrics by Juliana Nash Patio Playhouse Community Theater is proud to present this steamy musical about a love triangle gone awry with book and lyrics by Julia Jordan and music and lyrics by Juliana Nash, now running at Patio Playhouse’s Kalmia location through November 6. The story centers around Sara, a young woman whose relationship with wild bartender Tom is supplanted for a more reasonable and stable future with NYU scholar Michael. When Sara’s itch for passion returns, she finds herself enticed by a dangerous proposition and secretly diving into a sexy affair with Tom yet again, unbeknownst to her husband and daughter. How can it possibly last? There’s something chillingly perfect about presenting a murder ballad this time of year, and the skilled cast members capitalize on the danger of October, weaving the story together in a way that has audiences on the edge of their seats.The cast of four (Josalyn Johnson as the Narrator, Sarah LeClair as Sara, Jason Schlarmann as Tom, Robert Alegria as Michael, and Kylie Buckland as Sara/Narrator U/S) are accompanied by a live band led by Music Director Jerrica Ignacio that will have audiences rocking. And, now entering its second weekend, Murder Ballad has received positive acclaim from audiences, who rave in particular about the talent of the performers and the suspense inherent to a show that mashes together musical and murder.
