Join our Tellabration!™ celebration of all things stories, live, in-person once again! Tellabration!™ is a worldwide, synchronous storytelling event. This is storytelllng at its best--no notes--Moth style. Expect personal, folkloric and literary tales to thrill and chuckle over with the theme of Tradewinds, Tides and Tales, all influenced by the Ocean Beach seaside atmosphere. We welcome new voices to the Tellabration!™ stage, Catherine Bonin and Carol Jaksa. Returning storytellers are San Diego stalwarts, Jim Dieckmann, Patti Christensen/James Nelson-Lucas (The Patchwork Players,) Fred Laskowski, Arlyn Hackett, David Schmidt and Marilyn McPhie. The evening is designed for those ages 12 and up. There will be a book table with the direction, "take one or more, toss a donation into the basket." Quint Gallery is pleased to present an installation of new paintings by San Diego-based artist Gail Roberts. Created over the past four years, "Color Field" includes 128 equally scaled paintings of flowers, weeds, and native plants in Roberts’ garden surrounding her studio. Color Field refers to gradients found in nature which Roberts has ordered and classified by hue for the installation. The exhibition will open to the public on September 8 and will continue through Nov. 6, 2021. There will be a reception on September 11 from 6-8 p.m. and an artist talk on October 9 at 11 a.m. By engaging with nature’s tension between order and chaos, Roberts’ paintings illustrate the significance of protecting nature’s intricacy and biodiversity as accelerated erosion and the climate crisis threaten the future health and survival of our planet. In these paintings, each blossom, whether large or small, widely popular or undervalued, drought-tolerant or water guzzlers, indigenous or alien, invasive or fragile, edible or toxic, is given an equal role in a so-called ‘documentary on democracy’, granting grandeur to the subtlety of the underrepresented and less noticeable flowers. This is Roberts’ largest body of work to date. Gail Roberts’ work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including the Centro Estatal de las Artes in Tijuana and Ensenada; Galeria Nacional, San Jose, Costa Rica; Musee Rochefort-en-terre, Brittany, France; Ballinglen Museum of Contemporary Art, Ballycastle, Ireland; Carnegie Museum, Oxnard, CA; Oceanside Museum of Art, CA; Riverside Museum, CA; Fresno Metropolitan Museum, CA; California Center for the Arts Museum, and Madison Art Center, WI. Her work is included in permanent collections at the Oakland Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, as well as numerous corporate and private collections. Roberts has received various awards including the San Diego Art Prize, California Arts Council Fellowship and residency fellowships in France, Costa Rica and Ireland. She has completed public art commissions at the Chicago Public Library, Lux Art Institute, San Diego International Airport, Gibbs Cancer and Research Center and the Bearden-Josey Center, South Carolina. Gail Roberts received her BFA and MA at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and is a Professor of Art Emerita at San Diego State University.

Join us this Saturday, October 15 for a series of free cooking classes at Linda Vista Community Park! At Means of Smoke is a free cooking school from San Diego artist Brian Goeltzenleuchter and New York chef Tessa Liebman . Participants will learn recipes and techniques from members of the diverse communities that make up the Linda Vista neighborhood. Visiting is open to all, but class space is limited. Join the Library for our Autumn Concert Series on Fridays from September 3 to October 28. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On October 21, jazz pianist and San Diego Symphony guest artist Joshua White will perform. Pianist Joshua White has been praised by legendary musicians like Herbie Hancock as having “immense talent." He has also distinguished himself as a formidable leader among his peers. Born and raised in Southern California, White received early training at the piano and developed rapidly through rigorous study of both Western European Classical literature and the Black American Music traditions. Shortly after placing in the top two as a finalist at the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, Joshua began concertizing as a soloist and musical collaborator all over the world -- and continues to maintain an active touring schedule throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. White can most often be heard with his critically-acclaimed trio (featuring Karl McComas-Reichl, bass and Tyler Kreutel, drums), as well as The Mark Dresser Quintet, Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble, The Daniel Rosenboom Quartet, Steph Richards & Super Sense, and LANCASTER (featuring Eric Revis, bass; Jeff Parker, guitar; and Guillermo Brown, drums).
