Oct. 26-Nov. 14, 2021 From The Old Globe: Rooted in the vibrant interplay between performers and audience, "Shakespeare: Call and Response" is an hour-long celebration of verse, music, dance, and audience participation. Built for plazas and outdoor venues, the piece features five virtuosic actors, who transform into a variety of roles based on feedback from the audience. Part “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and part “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged),” the event is anchored by a DJ inviting the crowd in while spinning hits to get people on their feet. No two shows are the same, but all include scenes from five significant Shakespeare plays. NUNO —which simply means “cloth” in Japanese— is headed by world-renowned textile designer Reiko Sudo, who launched the company more than 35 years ago with textile icon Jun’ichi Arai. NUNO seamlessly networks the independent spinners, dyers and mills that still survive in villages throughout Japan with a highly-developed communications infrastructure. NUNO, the Language of Textiles showcases thirty of the company’s most iconic designs in an intimate format that allows visitors to interact directly with the fabrics, experiencing the structure, texture and drape of each one up close. The first west coast NUNO exhibition in over a decade, the Inamori Pavilion at the base of the Japanese Friendship Garden, with its authentically Japanese, yet state-of-the-art, architecture, is an ideal venue for this celebration of tradition and innovation. Come hear 5 musical settings of Ave Verum Corpus from the Gregorian Chant, a solo by Gounod to choral settings by Mozart, Elgar, and Fauré, performed by the Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra and Chorus (Dr. Angela Yeung, director) in collaboration with the St Bart's Episcopal Church Community Choir (Dr. John-Luke Addison, director). Our performance of Fauré’s Requiem will be based on the full orchestra version published in 1901. Free admission with free-will donation at the door.
