2nd Annual Youth Exhibit "Sueños del Futuro: Youth-Led Land Stewardship" Join us on May 16 for the opening reception of our second annual youth led art exhibition. "BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions" is adapted from a video art installation by Kahlil Joseph. The work is presented as a cinematic experience structured to resemble the sonic qualities of a record album. It combines fictional and historical elements in an immersive format that features fictionalized portrayals of W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey, alongside appearances by artists, musicians, members of Joseph's family, and material drawn from Twitter chats, collectively forming a vision centered on Black consciousness. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Kahlil Joseph (Director), Onye Anyanwu (Producer), King Britt (Prof. of Music), and Brian Cross (Prof. of Visual Arts), 6:30 - 8 p.m. Co-Presented by the Department of Visual Arts and IDEAS at UC San Diego.

Back to San Diego borderlandia, a must see iconic one-time show by performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña - writer, activist, radical pedagogue & artistic director of the performance troupe La Pocha Nostra. In this solo performance monologue, performance artist and writer Guillermo Gómez-Peña presents a selection of classic texts from his vast “living archives” alongside recent work written over the past four years. Artist Statement: My current performance represents the fruit of my life’s work in all its iterations: live performance, lecturing, archiving, literary work, mentoring, community activism, all coming together to address the dangers of the times we live in with its disregard for human life and insidious undermining of democracy. At this time in my life I am thinking as much about legacy as I am trying to continually produce socially conscious experimental artwork that is simultaneously plugged into the national debates. I have learned from decades of touring performance material to locations beyond the Border that a call to action - in the form of a work of art - has the power to elicit compassion and inculcate a desire for social justice. For me performance art is a form of radical democracy and citizenship which depends on the presence of the audience/community to succeed. I view my approach to creating this hybrid piece as "performing the archives" for multiple contexts: The art world, academia, community and the media. I am particularly interested in connecting with a new generation of audience members who may not have been exposed to the history of my generation, performance art and the Chicano movement. Gus Fink Studios and The Tipsy Crow (770 Fifth Ave.) today announced a Comic-Con collaboration naming the historic three-story Gaslamp Quarter bar the official home base of "The Kreepy Crossing," a free public art treasure hunt and live painting event on Friday, July 24, from 4 to 8 PM. Throughout the afternoon, eleven original Gus Fink paintings will be hidden across historic Gaslamp landmarks, with clues dropping every 20 minutes to a large social audience of followers — free to find, and finders keepers! Fink, creator of the Kreepy Cuddles character line carried nationally at Spencer’s, and Spirit Halloween, will paint live at an easel at The Tipsy Crow all evening before revealing a new character at 8 p.m. The reveal is followed by a giveaway of 100 free SDCC exclusive collectibles and a drawing for $500 in prizes. The event is open to everyone — no Comic-Con badge needed. To mark the partnership, The Tipsy Crow’s bar team will debut “Sid’s Night Watch” an exclusive cocktail inspired by the fan favorite Kreepy Cuddles character Sid, a onetime nightmare re-imagined as a protective guardian.
