José Cruz González's new play, "Under a Baseball Sky," is inspired by the Mexican American community of Logan Heights. The world premiere production runs Feb. 16 through March 12 at The Old Globe.

From his childhood in Ivory Coast to his wanderings in Italy, France, the United States and Burkina Faso, he has written his score along the lines of diversity. Martha Gonzalez (lead singer, percussionist, and songwriter) calls it an “East LA Chicano @ rock group,” summing up its rootedness in the complex cultural currents of life in the barrio, its social activism, its strong feminist stance, and its rock and roll musical beginnings. Besides being a rock band, the group and its members participate in a much larger web of musical, cultural, and political engagement. Gene Perry & Rumba Ketumba Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 7 p.m. The Guggenheim Theatre, UC San Diego Park & Market A fixture in the local music scene since 1974, Gene Perry was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and was one of the earliest pioneers of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean music in San Diego. His ensemble, Rumba Ketumba, is composed of a mixture of San Diego natives and musicians from around the world. Rumba Ketumba plays a high-energy mixture of Afro-Latin, Caribbean, Spanish Rumba, and other dance rhythms. Curator Yael Strom, whose Yiddish klezmer group has previously collaborated with Rumba Ketumba, will host and conduct a Q&A with the group after their performance. September 6–October 22, 2022 Opening Reception: Saturday, September 10, 5–8 p.m. during Barrio Art Crawl From the organizers: This exhibition is a celebration of the transformation of paper and its importance in many inventive art processes and creations. Paper Print Bind showcases the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library’s extraordinary Erika & Fred Torri Artists’ Books Collection. In addition, it presents a carefully curated array of contemporary artworks made with paper by renowned regional and international artists. The common thread throughout this exhibition is the use of the traditional medium of paper in contemporary practices that empowers artists to bind, print, and create artworks out of paper. All the artists exhibiting in Paper Print Bind share a history of teaching, collaborating, or taking part in the Athenaeum’s collections and classes. Thus, this exhibition serves both to celebrate our alliance with artists in the paper community at large and to feature the Print Studio and papermaking studio in the Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights. A major reason for the universal allure of paper lies in its identity and utility as a truly “eco-friendly” sustainable product derived from natural practices throughout human history. Because much of our diverse cultures all over the world are created and shared on paper, we embrace the fragility and eco-friendly nature of paper as a much-needed reminder of our origins in the organic world in this modern technological age. African American Music Appreciation Month, originally called Black Music Month, was created by Kenny Gamble, Dyana Williams, and radio DJ Ed Wright and became official under President Jimmy Carter on June 7th, 1979 by celebrating on the White House lawn. Join us at the Logan Heights library as we celebrate this special month, as well as the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop and its roots, with a high energy performance that will be sure to get your toes tapping. From the organizers: All Ages Show featuring CUMBIA LEGENDS: Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto and special guest La Diabla and Mitchum Yacoub, hosted by Bad Vibes Good Friends at Corazon del Barrio. The San Diego debut of Latin Grammy award winning Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto. Los Gaiteros de San Jancinto are a traditional folkloric cumbia group formed in the Caribbean Region of Colombia. They've been active since 1940. This is the source of cumbia, the very music that preserves the traditional rhythms and sounds of Colombia's Indigenous, Spanish and Afro-Colombian heritage. This is a rare an absoulute must see. La Diabla combines traditional cumbia music with the gritty spirit of Tijuana, and they bring their bi-national dance party wherever they go. Mitchum Yacoub is an Egyptian-American multi-instrumentalist, producer, and DJ based out of San Diego, CA. As a lifelong drummer that has supported many projects in the vein of afrobeat, soul, funk, and reggae, he's been slow brewing a unique feel for roots and dance music. Since beginning his first live performances in late 2019, Yacoub has played alongside roots music heavies like The Original Wailers, Antibalas, and Jungle Fire. In 2022, his group supported Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 for six shows across the U.S., while he traded on percussion and drum kit for Kuti's band: Egypt 80 (formerly of Fela Kuti).
