Upcycling Fun! Thursday, August 13, from 6-8:30 p.m. Give new life to your wardrobe in this creative, beginner-friendly 2.5 hour workshop! Led by local-artist and printmaker Kasey Leung, you’ll learn how to design, carve, and hand-print your own original block, then use it to transform a piece of clothing you already own. Bring a garment like a denim jacket, linen pants, cotton shirt, or canvas tote, and learn how to thoughtfully place your print to create a one-of-a-kind wearable piece. Feel free to come with ideas, inspiration, or printed reference images, keeping in mind that your design will need to fit within a 4×6 inch block. The best fabrics for block printing are natural fibers with smooth, tight weaves, such as cotton or linen. It’s best to avoid stretchy, heavily textured, or fuzzy fabrics like knit or wool. No experience needed and all printing materials are provided. Just bring a few cotton or linen-based items, and we can work together to select the best one to print on! This workshop is all about personal expression, experimentation, and embracing the beauty of handmade imperfections. You’ll leave with a refreshed, uniquely yours piece of clothing and your carved block to keep creating at home. Beginners welcome! Join us for this 3-hour workshop, as you learn to handcraft your own unique kumihimo bracelet. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese artform and craftwork for making braids and cords. In the past, kumihimo decorations were used as accessories for kimono as well as samurai armor. Literally meaning gathered threads, kumihimo are made by interlacing reels of yarn, commonly silk, with the use of traditional, specialized looms. With the advent of an inexpensive handheld loom, you can make bracelets and necklaces affordably and easily. Create handmade cards to send to children in the foster care system. For 5 years, the founder of Song in Motion has contributed to an annual Cards For Cubs fundraiser by creating and donating over 250 handmade cards. Song in Motion is inviting the community to attend our FREE card making event where attendees ages 8+ can create their own cards to send to children in the foster care system! All supplies are provided. Last year, we welcomed 26 attendees who created over 100 cards in support of the Cards for Cubs* annual fundraiser. This year, we are setting an ambitious goal of 150 cards! Help us reach this goal by attending this FREE event. All supplies and materials are included, all you have to do is show up and get crafty! Join OMA’s Free First Sundays for Art for All! Each month, OMA welcomes friends and neighbors on Free First Sundays to join in Art for All, our fun hands-on art-making experience led by artists and cultural partners from our community. In celebration of the Big Read in partnership with Oceanside Public Library, this April’s Art For All draws inspiration from "The Seed Keeper." Participants will create native plant clay seed bombs. These are small, sculptural clay forms filled with local, pollinator-friendly native seeds. These unfired clay shapes can be placed in your yard or garden, where the clay will naturally break down and allow the seeds to take root in the soil. Whether you’re new to art or have your own creative flow, Art for All is the time to let your imagination soar. Visit our current exhibitions to spark your creativity!
