Shifting soil has plagued the coastal rail line between San Diego and Orange counties the past few years, often causing monthslong shutdowns. Now the project to fix the rail is getting a $125 million financial boost from the state. And last week, the Pentagon upgraded discharge codes for hundreds of LGBTQ+ veterans. The problem is it only applied to those forced out under Don't Ask, Don't Tell, leaving out the thousands separated before that became policy. Plus, a new documentary focuses on efforts to get Iraqi refugees living in El Cajon counted in the 2020 U.S. Census.

Back to Source goes back to the roots of West African music and infuses it with Black futurism of Chicago House, Detroit Techno, Funk and more. For the first part of the night, immerse yourself in a healing sound bath of ambient electronics accompanied by the ancient West African kora played by Fode Sissoko of the Joko International & DAANSEKOU Cultural Arts Collective. The rest of the night, dance and celebrate community resiliency to the rhythm of live West African drums and Blacktronika music provided by Professor King Britt.

“Shooting for the Stars,” a talk by Richard Danne of Danne & Blackburn fame focuses on Richard’s life and illustrious career in brand identity and communication design fostered by his guiding principle: “Create work that has beauty, simplicity, and permanence.” The presentation includes the story behind the rise, fall, and rebirth of the award-winning NASA “worm” logo design, now one of the world’s most recognized design programs. In addition to receiving three U.S. Presidential Awards for Design Excellence and NASA’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal, the logo, along with its graphic standards manual, was recently placed into the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. Following the presentation, Richard will be signing his new book, Shooting for the Stars: Six Decades of Timeless Design.
