This docent-led talk continues to explore the relationships between artists and their mentors. Throughout history, artists have developed important skills and ideas by studying the works of the geniuses who acted as their teachers and mentors. During the 17th century Rembrandt and Rubens, who both maintained vibrant workshops, helped pave the way for the creative advancement of many brilliant painters. Earlier during the 15th century, the Bellini dynasty led by Jacopo and his sons Gentile and Giovanni ushered in the modern era of Venetian Renaissance painting. For example, the artist Bartolomeo Veneto whose painting, Portrait of a Lady in a Green Dress, which is part of the Timken Museum collection, studied under Gentile Bellini. In addition the idea of rivalry among artists such as Raphael and Michelangelo assisted in their growth as incomparable geniuses. While not a student teacher relationship, studying each other's creations led to their strength as International superstars.
