  • The transcendent new album from Ani Di Franco, Revolutionary Love (out January 29, 2021), marks the latest proof of one of her most powerful gifts as an artist: a rare ability to give voice to our deepest frustrations and tensions, on both a personal and political level. “My songs have always reflected an acute connection between my personal life and the life of my society,” says the trailblazing musician and activist. “As I started to come out of years of dealing with marriage problems, I saw my entire country in the same situation; the complete breakdown of communication and loss of empathy and connection. But after what seems like unforgivable damage, then where do you go? You can’t kick each other off the planet, you can’t change the past, so what then?” Come see them perform at Belly Up Tavern on June 21, 2022. The doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Ticket Price: $42 advanced / $45 day of show / $74 reserved loft seating (available over the phone or in person at out box office) Genre: singer songwriter

  • "Thus the man who is responsive to artistic stimuli reacts to the reality of dreams as does the philosopher to the reality of existence: He observes closely, and he enjoys his observations; for it is out of these images that he interprets life, out of these processes that he trains himself for life." —Friedrich Nietzsche, "Twilight of the Idols" What is the importance of being human? I’m sure there will be many answers extolling the virtues of our greatness with human creativity, intelligence, naming inventions, cures for diseases, our love and compassion, etc. Are we also important because we self-reflect, we think about ourselves, and we think about others? We also know we are going to die. Yet, people still function every day like they are immortal and that itself could be looked upon as heroic. What matters? This workshop is an exploration of poetry (of others and ours) stimulated by these thoughts. We will read, write, philosophize, and write some more. Date | Sunday, May 1 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Location | Online via Zoom Register here! Members: $36 Non-members: $42 For more information, please visit sandiegowriters.org/online-what-matters-seretta-martin or call (619) 696-0363.
  • This docent-led talk continues to explore the relationships between artists and their mentors. Throughout history, artists have developed important skills and ideas by studying the works of the geniuses who acted as their teachers and mentors. During the 17th century Rembrandt and Rubens, who both maintained vibrant workshops, helped pave the way for the creative advancement of many brilliant painters. Earlier during the 15th century, the Bellini dynasty led by Jacopo and his sons Gentile and Giovanni ushered in the modern era of Venetian Renaissance painting. For example, the artist Bartolomeo Veneto whose painting, Portrait of a Lady in a Green Dress, which is part of the Timken Museum collection, studied under Gentile Bellini. In addition the idea of rivalry among artists such as Raphael and Michelangelo assisted in their growth as incomparable geniuses. While not a student teacher relationship, studying each other's creations led to their strength as International superstars. Even loosely examining the artwork of others has often assisted many individuals in building their own oeuvre. Date | Thursday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to noon Location | Online Register here for free! This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit timkenmuseum.org/calendar/event/free-virtual-talk-artists-and-their-mentors-part-ii or contact Alexandra Riley at (619) 550-5955.
  • Love and the complications surrounding it have long proven to be Joshua Radin's songwriting forte. Though he never intended to be a live performer, there was little choice when the first song he ever wrote, "Winter," was featured on an episode of "Scrubs." The resulting fervor around the song soon led to a record deal, and over the last decade, Radin has toured the world countless times, sold hundreds of thousands of records and topped the iTunes charts, earned raves from Rolling Stone to The Guardian, performed on "The Tonight Show," "Conan," and more, played Ellen DeGeneres' wedding at her personal request, and had his songs featured in more than 150 different films, commercials, and TV shows. William Fitzsimmons is a singer, songwriter and guitarist. He is considered the greatest whisper rock artist of all time. His music has been described as “A bummer” and “Dude, work that stuff out on your own time” and yet here we are on his Facebook page, LOVING his music.
